1 NOUNS WHAT SENTENCES ARE ALL ABOUT!

2 WHAT IS A NOUN?  A NOUN is a word or word group that is used to name a person, place, thing or idea.  Nouns can be simple or compound.  Nouns can be singular or plural.  Nouns can show possession.  Nouns can be common or proper.  Nouns can be concrete or abstract.  Nouns can be collective.

3 SIMPLE VS. COMPOUND NOUNS  A simple noun is made up of just one word.  teacher, classroom, desk, knowledge  A compound noun is a single noun made up of two or more words used together.  Compound nouns can be written in three ways:  One word- such as grandmother or basketball  Hyphenated word- such as mother-in-law or light-year  Two words- such as jumping jack or sit up

4 SINGULAR VS. PLURAL  Singular nouns represent just one person, place, thing, or idea  Ex: captain, island, boat, leadership  Plural nouns represent more than one person, place, thing, or idea  Ex: sailors, ports, sails

5 NOUNS CAN BE POSSESSIVE  Both singular and plural nouns can have ownership of another noun.  Ownership is shown using “–’s” or “-s’” but NEVER “-s’s”  Ex: My brother has an iPad  My brother’s iPad  Ex: My parents have two dogs.  My parents’ dogs

6 COMMON VS. PROPER NOUNS  Common nouns name any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas and are not capitalized unless they begin the sentence  Ex: leader, country, monument  Proper nouns name specific people, places, things, or ideas and begin with a capital letter  Ex: President Obama, United States of America, Washington Monument

7 CONCRETE VS. ABSTRACT  Concrete nouns name people, places, or things that can be perceived by one or more of the 5 senses  What are the 5 senses?  Ex: photograph, music, filmmaker, Brooklyn Bridge  Abstract nouns name ideas, feelings, a quality, or characteristics.  love, fun, freedom, self-esteem, beauty, honor, wisdom

8 NOUNS CAN BE COLLECTIVE  A collective noun is a word that names a group  Ex: audience, committee, herd, quartet, swarm, batch, crew, family, team, litter, class
