5 1. Missouri Compromise 1820 - 1821  The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state, and prohibited slavery in territory that later became Kansas and Nebraska.

6 2. Compromise of 1850  The compromise admitted California to the United States as a “free” state but allowed other territories to decide on slavery for themselves.  Also included the Fugitive Slave ActFugitive Slave Act

7 Popular Sovereignty  doctrine under which the status of slavery in the territories was to be determined by the settlers themselves.  Was a means of avoiding sectional conflict over the slavery issue

8 Fugitive Slave Act  Gave slave-owners legal right to pursue their escaped slaves into “free states”.  Made it a federal offense to help free slaves or house them  Northerners react by becoming more anti-slavery

9 3. Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854  It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders.  Repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´.

10 New Republican Party Rises  Claimed to be decedents of the Democratic Republicans (Thomas Jefferson)  Opposed the spread of slavery  Motto “Free soil, Free Labor, Free Men”

11 4. Dred Scott 1857  Scott V. Sandford  Slaves were property and could be taken anywhere without threat of being freed  African Americans were not citizens  declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional

12 5. John Brown’s Raid 1859  John Brown led a group to raid Harper’s Ferry, and National Arsenal, and attempted to free slaves  Failed and was hung  Becomes known as a martyr to the North

15 7. Confederacy Formed  South Carolina secedes (leaves) the Union  The Confederate States of America were formed in February of 1861
