1 S 3 Challenges to Slavery  In 1854 antislavery Whigs and Democrats joined with the Free- Soilers to create the Republican Party.  Election of 1856 a. The Republicans chose John C. Frémont b. The Democrats chose James Buchanan. c. The Know-Nothings, former president Millard Fillmore.  Buchanan won with 174 electoral votes. A New Political Party

2  In 1846 Scott sued for his freedom, Scott said he should be free because he had lived in places where slavery was illegal.  Reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1857, Roger B. Taney was Chief Justice.  The Court ruled that Scott was not free, even though he had lived on free soil.  Taney ruled that slaves were property. The Dred Scott Case

3  In 1858 the Senate election in Illinois drew national attention, Stephen A. Douglas, (“the Little Giant.”) a Democrat, was running against Abraham Lincoln, a Republican.  Douglas believed in popular sovereignty, slavery should be decided by the voters.  Douglas won the election, but people liked Lincoln’s clear thinking. Lincoln and Douglas

4  Brown planned to arm the slaves for a revolt.  Local citizens and troops stopped the raid.  Convicted of treason and murder, Brown was sentenced to death. Raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
