In 1846 Scott sued for his freedom, Scott said he should be free because he had lived in places where slavery was illegal. Reached the U.S. Supreme Court in 1857, Roger B. Taney was Chief Justice. The Court ruled that Scott was not free, even though he had lived on free soil. Taney ruled that slaves were property. The Dred Scott Case

In 1858 the Senate election in Illinois drew national attention, Stephen A. Douglas, (“the Little Giant.”) a Democrat, was running against Abraham Lincoln, a Republican. Douglas believed in popular sovereignty, slavery should be decided by the voters. Douglas won the election, but people liked Lincoln’s clear thinking. Lincoln and Douglas

Brown planned to arm the slaves for a revolt. Local citizens and troops stopped the raid. Convicted of treason and murder, Brown was sentenced to death. Raid on the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia.
