3 | 10 Copyright © Cengage Learning. All rights reserved. SETTING GOALS Dated: Specific Deadline Achievable: Challenging but Realistic Personal: Yours because You want it Positive: Achievement, not Avoidance Specific: Concrete and Measurable "By March 31 st..." "... I will weigh 135 pounds..." "... I will have an 85..." "... I will complete three trainings to increase my promotion chances..." "... I will submit resumes for three jobs I would really like..." This is the DAPPS Rule Dated Achievable Personal Positive Specific
11
3 | 11 Copyright © Cengage Learning. All rights reserved. SETTING GOALS Achievable? I'm going to get a starring role in a major motion picture this semester. I'm going to be president of a Fortune 500 company by the time I'm 23 years old. Within two years, I'm going to have my own line of designer clothing featured at Macy's. Achievable? I'm going to earn key roles in four major college dramas by the time I graduate. I'm going to earn an MBA (Master of Business Administration) degree within six years. I'm going to earn an 'A' in every design class.
12
3 | 12 Copyright © Cengage Learning. All rights reserved. SETTING GOALS Specific? I'm going to make better grades. I'm going to get a good job someday. I need to figure out what I want to major in. Specific I will earn a 'B' in Calculus. I will research three employers and prepare resumes that target each one. I will go to the Career Center and take a career interest inventory.
13
3 | 13 Copyright © Cengage Learning. All rights reserved. APPLICATION PRACTICE Identify whether each of these is an example of applying the DAPPS rule. "By November 1 st, I will raise my Biology average to 85%." "I'm going to make better grades this semester." "My parents want me to get a college degree. "By December 1, I'm going to be registered for next semester." YES! NO YES! NO

As you read it, prepare to answer these questions: What images can you picture from this description? What sensory words does the writer use? What emotions come to mind as you read the description? What would you add or change to make the visualization more effective for you?
16
3 | 16 Copyright © Cengage Learning. All rights reserved. I get a huge grin on my face and start laughing out loud. I remember a waitress at a barbecue place in North Carolina. When she came to take away my plate, I showed her some lyrics I'd written on a napkin. "You're going to hear this on the radio one day. It’s called ‘A Mama Who Will Stay,’" I told her. Riding in my car, I chuckle out loud, reach over and turn the volume up a bit. A feeling of tremendous satisfaction washes through me like a warm breeze. My dream has come true! MY VISUALIZATION (JOURNAL ENTRY 10) I am driving down a back road in the Appalachian foothills, listening to a country music station. It's a beautiful day, sun glistening on autumn leaves, air crisp and clean. I roll down the window and feel the wind on my arm, take another sip of Mountain Dew. After a classic Emmylou Harris song, the DJ announces, "Here's a new song from Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, off their latest album. This one's called 'A Mama Who Will Stay.' I think you're gonna like it."

APPLYING THE CONCEPT Compare these two goal statements: By September 30 th, I will obtain a high paying job with the fastest growing company in our metropolitan area. Beginning May 1 st and continuing for ten weeks, I will send a letter of inquiry and my resume to five employers each week. Analyze both goals using the five criteria of the DAPPS Rule. What are the pluses and minuses of each goal statement?
