THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR The War That Made The United States

Rivals for an Empire In the 1750s, France was England’s greatest rival. France’s North American colony consisted mainly of fur trappers and frontiersmen. They wanted to exploit their territory economically rather than settle it. The French developed good relations with Native Americans through trading.

The War Begins French trappers expanded on English territory. The English sent soldiers to the frontier to protect its settlements. George Washington was involved in the first battle of the war at Fort Necessity.

Early French Victories The Indian alliance with the French helped in early battles. The French were successful early in the war because of their hit and run tactics. The British army was not used to this type of fighting.

The British Turn the Tide William Pitt, a new English leader, borrowed a lot of money to create a large army. With this large army, the English began defeating the French. The war ended in 1763.

Two Outcomes of the War The British won all of the land of North America east of the Mississippi River. England would engage in costly conflicts between settlers and Native Americans. The Proclamation of 1763 banned all settlement of colonists west of the Proclamation line.
