2 Hong Kong Budding Poets (English) Award 2006 – 2007 The competition is co-organized by the Gifted Education (GE) Section and the Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) Section.

3 Aim of the Competition To provide a platform for students to think creatively. To inspire them with a passion for poetry. To identify those gifted in English and provide them with further training in writing poems.

4 Objectives of the Competition To develop students ’ higher-order thinking skills and creativity. To enhance students ’ awareness and appreciation of poetry. To give students an opportunity to strive for excellence in literature.

5 Targets of the Competition Upper Primary Students (Key stage 2) Junior Secondary Students (Key stage 3)

6 Primary section: All upper primary students except International and ESF schools Secondary section: All junior secondary students except International and ESF schools Open section: Students of ALL primary and secondary schools Entries must be submitted through school. Division of Entrants

7 Each student can only submit 1 copy of his/her own unpublished poem for each section. All entries along with the completed entry form must be submitted by post or in person on or before 28 February 2007. Division of Entrants

8 Entry Format Requirements Primary section: a minimum of 12 lines Secondary section: a minimum of 16 lines Open section: a minimum of 20 lines. Entrants should write a poem on one of the four themes provided and adhere to the theme.

10 Poems should be typed and printed in Times New Roman font 14 on the template provided. School must submit the printouts of the typed poems together with the softcopies in Microsoft Word format. Entry Format Requirements

11 School must assign a student number to each student and put down the number on the top left hand corner of the poem as indicated in the Template.Template School name or student ’ s name should not be included on the poem submitted. Entry Format Requirements

12 School should make copies of the poems as all entries will not be returned and EDB will not be held responsible for lost or misdirected mail. 13 In the preliminary, all entries will be judged by a panel of adjudicators and 20 entries from each category (primary, secondary and open) will be selected. In the final, all selected entrants will have to attend an individual interview to share their views on their submitted poems with the adjudicators. Selection of Entries

14 Individual Interview In the final, all selected entrants will have to attend an individual interview to share their views on their submitted poems with the adjudicators. Interviews will be taped and a video clip will be shown in the Prize-giving Ceremony or other related educational activities.

15 The list of finalists will be announced in the web and a notification letter will be sent to schools. Results will be announced in the prize-giving ceremony. Notification of Finalists

18 Schools ’ Awards The Poet of the School Award: ONE for each school not less than 10 students to take part in the competition, and the entries demonstrate a high overall standard each winner will be awarded a certificate

19 Prize-giving Ceremony The Prize-giving Ceremony will be held in May 2006. Award winners will be invited to recite their award-winning poems at the ceremony.

22 Entrant gives permission to EDB to publish submitted poem on the Internet in electronic format, as well as in anthology or future promotional materials of the competition, or as curriculum resources. The Uses of the Entries
