APES 9/30 & 10/1 GET A COMPUTER!

Learning Targets  I can analyze and communicate the effect of salinity on seed germination.  I can use my math skills to calculate the volume of water run-off in a fictitious parking lot and research sources and consequences of run-off.

Soil Salinization Lab 1. Testable Question including MV and RV 2. Hypothesis 3. Procedure detailed enough that I could do it without help 4. Data table 5. Graphical representation of effect of soil salinity on seed germination (bar, line- whatever you like) 6. CLEVR conclusion  Claim = what was your hypothesis? Was it correct?  Evidence = at least 2 pieces of data to support your claim  Reasoning = why did your data turn out this way? (i.e. why would certain salinities affect seed germination in the way they did?)

Add to your lab…  Find another group that experimented on the same seed type as you did.  Add their data as a second trial  Add an average % germination to your data table

Conclusion Writing  MY prediction: CL, EV will be easy-ish for you.  R(easoning) will be harder  Background:  How do plant cells work, generally?  Osmosis  Why a high salt concentration outside a plant cell will stop seeds from germinating

Soil Salinization Lab  Read the requirements I went over carefully  Submit your lab as one group Google doc by Sunday at noon.  Include all group member’s names

AP Exam Info. – add to notes  60% of test = 100 MC Questions (90 minutes)  40% of test = 4 FRQs (90 minutes) FRQ #1: Always a “Data Base Question”- a document is provided to analyze. Could be an article, set of data, graph, etc. FRQ #2: Always a math-based question FRQ #3-4: General knowledge (not data base or math-based)

Free Response Tips  Be concise and answer the prompt only! Flowery language doesn’t help.  Do not use bullet points- must be in essay form.  Don’t restate the question in your answer.  Keep sections of your answer separate  Ex: a: ______________________________________ b: ________________________________________  If the questions asks for 2 examples, only the first two you give will be scored. If later in your answer you provide the right answer, too bad   Answer the easiest parts first! Your answers can be out of order, as long as they are marked!

Free Response Practice #1  Do this question on a separate piece of paper  You will need to use the book to research information for parts a, e, and f  Next time, you will put it in a folder (provided by me), scored and stapled to the prompt. These will stay in class and be used for review later.

Math Review (30 minutes)  Today’s Goal: Get through problem 55!  Ask me for help if you need it.  OR: Start the Chapter 2 Reading Assignment.

Due Next Time  Complete the Chapter 2 study guide in your lab book.  Bring a 2L bottle.  The FRQ is not homework. Leave it here! Reminder: test corrections and retakes need to be done today by 3:45!
