5 What to consider when choosing a language: 1. Your interest and desire to learn a particular language. 2. Your interest in the target culture(s). 3. Potential uses of the language: a) Future travel (where?) b) Business relations (which fields?) c) Further studies (literature, culture, science, etc.) d) For fun! * Talking over your options with parents is important, but ultimately the choice should be yours! * Taking a language just because your friends choose it isn’t the best approach. 14 Things to Know Before Registering for a Language: People lose the ability to learn a language as they get older, so start your language as soon as possible. At CHS, students can take up to four years of French, German or Spanish. Each level is divided into two sections: A and B. You must register for both sections during the same school year. (Ex: German 1A & 1B the same year.) Students should complete 2 years of one world language before considering another, and not take 2 languages at the same time. 15 There is no prerequisite for beginning a language, but we recommend that students have an English grade of C- or higher. The prerequisite to continue in language classes is a grade of C- or higher in the previous world language class. Honors options are available to students in levels 3 and 4 of each language. 16 To prepare for college: Most four-year colleges and universities require students take two to four years of a world language in high school. Studies show that students who study a second language usually get better scores on standardized tests (ACT, SAT). We offer the opportunity to earn college credit in some advanced courses. 17 To gain real life communication skills: Businesses prefer hiring people who are able to communicate in a second language and who are comfortable working with people from diverse cultures. Increasing numbers of people travel around the world for work and leisure. We provide students the opportunity to travel in an educational program that often includes a homestay.
