Developing Sports Club opportunities at KS1 ISSUE/SCENARIOACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS In Sept 2014 a questionnaire assessed which children were involved in Sports Clubs in and out of school. This provided evidence of gaps in opportunity locally and access issues for this age group. The school wanted to address this through in- school provision. A lunchtime Table Tennis Club was established supported by Corby TT Club A Rugby club was set up after school. An in- school Activity Club called “Lively Lions” run by Enhanced Sports Premium Officer involves was established involving 12 children a week for 2 terms. This has led to over a 25% increase in children accessing sports clubs. Children participating in Lively Lions have been noted by class teachers as having gained confidence in PE and are more keen to demonstrate their skills in lessons. Continue to offer a range of sports clubs in school Introduce the children to local club opportunities by inviting a range of coaches to give sports sessions at the annual Sports Week. Lively Lions Report Background: Class surveys were conducted to investigate the number and range of clubs and activities individual children do each week either through school or as an out of school session. The resulting register allowed Karen Johnson to see where there were gaps in provision and also identify children who would benefit from a physical activity club. The “Lively Lions” Club has been designed to provide 20 -25 minutes of intensive physical activity through social games. It is run by Beth Ranson. Registers: Two clubs are in operation Three pupils from Year 1 and Four from reception Seven pupils from Year 2 Activities: The children respond best to whole group running and catching games for example: Frost and Sun, Traffic Lights, domes and dishes. They have also enjoyed using the field for basic orienteering games, trails and memory-game activities. Group 2 is able to work within a designated area whilst Group 1 is developing this skill. This allows them to remain focussed for longer, develop their spacial awareness in terms of their own space and be aware of others for social and safety reasons. Beth Ranson tries to keep the children as active as possible during the session, keeping instructions to a minimum: Results so far: the children recognise themselves as being in a club and part of a group. They always enjoy coming out to Lively Lions. They ask for specific games that BR has taught them and can get themselves organised to play these quickly. Class teachers have noticed they show obvious signs of healthy exertion. Beth Ranson SPO

To develop play activities during lunch- time. To Develop Play Activities During Lunch-time. ACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS At Studfall we wanted to address the issue of developing active and positive play during lunch- times. A Lunchtime Play Co- ordinator, with sport experience, was employed to lead play activities. Support meetings were provided with the subject lead and SPO. Resources and advice were given to the Play Co- ordinator with regards to the activity focus for the week. The photographic evidence provided above shows that the lunch-time play activities reach a small number of children approximately at least 10 children to 25maximium. Consider training all dinner ladies to run a variety of activity stations in the play area for the duration of lunch. Provide training for lunch – staff on how to teach the children how to respect and store equipment safely. REAL PE Scheme + Staff Training 7. Staff Training

Staff Confidence Real PE – Staff Training Session1 – Staff were eager to try the new curriculum and were enthusiastic about the training. After trying a few lesson staff requested that in the next session a whole lesson was demonstrate direct from planning. Session 2 – Resulted in a drop in staff confidence as we had a different coach. This issue was addressed by subject lead and the previous coach returned and so did staff confidence. Session 3 – Included a demonstration of a number of up and coming lessons and any queries were addressed by the coach. A sample of staff feed back is below. Quotes from staff after 3 rd training session: Hi Karen Yes it was very helpful thank you. It was just what I needed. I feel I know what I am doing more and Liam was very reassuring in the fact that we are doing what we need to. I am very interested in knowing how to assess so the next session sounds great to me. Claire From: Kerry Swan Sent: 09 March 2015 18:26 To: Karen Johnston Subject: Re: PE Training Thank you It was great today- much better than the last instructor - lots of useful ideas that we can use in our pe lessons. He was reactive to what we were talking about in discussions and his ideas for our current unit was great. In the ideal world we could do with him doing a quick lesson on each of the units as he is very creative in the way he teaches the skills - things we would never come up with ourselves as we are all novices! I will definitely be incorporating his ideas in my cheeky monkeys lesson this week. I would definitely like ideas on how assess during the lesson and afterwards for our children - and getting them involved! I think this is something that none if us in reception can do at the moment
25
Staff Confidence(2) Hi Karen, I thought the training tonight was really good! It was exactly what I needed to understand where I am supposed to be going with it. I really liked how he modelled creating the learning journey on the board from the book as that is something I have found tricky but he has made it really easy! Thank you again for booking the session Aimee Session 4 –Focused on lesson demonstrations and assessment. In addition, the subject leader provided further training on documenting assessment. The results from the staff confidence feedback forms are as follows: All staff have commented on improved confidence when teaching REAL PE as a result of the training. Next Steps: To complete final training session. Further staff training in assessment by subject lead. Training of new staff members. Continued training – 2 hours per term for all staff as requested in staff evaluations.

To develop children’s confidence and self esteem. ISSUE/SCENARIO ACTIONS TAKEN IMPACT AND EVIDENCE NEXT STEPS In Sept 2014 our school wanted to support children with their confidence and self esteem through in- school provision. In consultation with forest leaders, a site was developed SIS - to enable the continued provision of forest school activities. Forest school leaders plan, teach and evaluate learning in the forest environment. Self –esteem and confidence is also monitored and progress is fed back to teachers. Equipment to develop school site has been bought Children are kept physically active in a variety of activities e.g. archery after making their own bows and arrows, rugby style multi- skills games with forest themes and a variety of climbing opportunities. Children participating in the forest school have shown instant and marked improvement in confidence. One class teacher said, “I referred 3 children from my class to forest school who were new to the school. They were struggling to make new bonds with friends. Now they are the best of friends and they come into school smiling. I could always tell these children had been to forest school because they would return with an active glow.” Continue to offer the forest school provision. Invest in further equipment to develop the provision further. PHOTO OR DIAGRAM HERE please use as high quality images as possible – ideally 2MB each – this poster will be blown up to A1/A2 in size

This year at Studfall Infants, for the first year we have hosted a Healthy Schools Week. During this week there were 3 main areas of focus during this week: Physical Activity Healthy Eating Emotional Well Being The children enjoyed the week and each child was given the opportunity to make a healthy snack. Next Steps: Next year consider having a main focus of healthy eating and invite parents in to cook with their child for a “Come Dine With Me.” 13. Healthier Child Project
