5 Defining, Naming, and Describing Organic Compounds (Tables P &O) 1. Organic Compounds - have carbon atoms (see pics in table Q and R) 2. Hydrocarbons contain C and H only 3. 8 Empirical vs Molecular Formula Molecular Formula: tells how many atoms are in a covalent compound (note: “Molecular Bonds” are “Covalent Bonds.” Molecular Formula is also called “chemical formula” Ex: water is H 2 O. Butane is C 4 H 10 Empirical Formula: tells the lowest ratio of atoms in a molecule (after reducing by the GCF) Ex Butane’s molecular formula is C 4 H 10 but it’s empirical formula is C 2 H 5 1.
