2 Mixtures and Solutions Notes and Metacognition

3 Mixtures and Solutions Interactive Notes Mixtures and Solutions Notes *A mixture is any 2 or more substances that are mixed together. * There are many types of mixtures. *A simple mixture maintains the properties of its ingredients. * A solution has 1 or more substances dissolved in another. Interactions *Give an example of a simple mixture. Draw, label and color your example. *Give an example of a solution. Draw, label and color your example. *Make a list of some useful tools you could use to separate simple mixtures. *Make another list of tools you could use to separate solutions.

4 2. Make a 3 column T chart to list the physical properties you could use to separate sand, gravel and salt. Metacognition 3.Describe one way to separate a mixture of sand, gravel, and salt. 1. Would a magnet help you separate a mixture of iron nails and iron screws? Explain your answer. 4. Explain why the beach is both a mixture and a solution. 5. Describe why soda is a solution of solids, liquids and gas. 1. No a magnet would not be helpful. Both items are magnetic, so you wouldn’t separate them with a magnet. 2. Gravel Sand Salt___ Size size solubility Shape shape 4. The mixture at the beach is the sand and water as well as the living things. Those things do not dissolve. The solution is the ocean water. The salt is dissolved in the water. 3. One way to separate this mixture is to use a sieve to separate the gravel from the sand and salt. Then add water to the sand and salt and the salt will dissolve. Once the salt is dissolved, you can use a sieve again to separate the salt water from the sand. Last, you can evaporate the water and you’d be left with salt, sand and gravel all separated. 5. Soda has all three states of matter. The main part of the soda is a liquid. Sugar is a solid and its dissolved in the drink. The gas bubbles (carbon dioxide) are also dissolved throughout the drink.
