Participants –Computer scientists –US-CMS (High Energy Physics) –US-ATLAS(High Energy Physics) –LIGO(Gravity wave experiment) –SDSS(Sloan Digital Sky Survey)

3 330 April 2003 Manuela Campanelli, UTB manuelal@phys.utb.edu GriPhyN/iVDGL Basics Both NSF funded, overlapping periods –GriPhyN: $11.9M (NSF) + $1.6M (match)(2000–2005) –iVDGL: $13.7M (NSF) + $2M (match)(2001–2006) Basic composition –GriPhyN: 12 universities, SDSC, 3 labs(~80 people) –iVDGL: 16 institutions, SDSC, 3 labs(~70 people) –Experiments:CMS, ATLAS, LIGO, SDSS –Large overlap of people, institutions, management Grid research vs Grid deployment –GriPhyN: 2/3 “CS” + 1/3 “physics”( 0% HW) –iVDGL: 1 /3 “CS” + 2/3 “physics”(20% HW) –Tight integration of goals & deliverables >Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) and Outreach in common

4 430 April 2003 Manuela Campanelli, UTB manuelal@phys.utb.edu GriPhyN/iVDGL Outreach Program Goals Communicate the ideas of the computational and data grids to a diverse community of faculty and students, as well as the public at large. Incorporate faculty, K-12, undergrad and beginning graduate students at other institutions (in particular MSI) into GriPhyN/iVDGL research. Engage all senior personnel to lecture and mentor E/O activities, facilitated by an outreach coordinator anchored at The University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB).

(HU), Salish Kootenai College (SKC), etc >Diversity, research and computational infrastructure Engage all GriPhyN/iVDGL researchers to do outreach –Give talks, mentor students, etc Work with other E/O programs –Share ideas, activities, workshops, etc >EOT-PACI, QuarkNet, AN-MSI etc Build external outreach component: –Web pages, Newsletter, etc –Contact with Press, CS and Physics communities

Enhance the collaborations with other E/O programs. Work on annual Newsletter. Organize annual Outreach Workshop, VDT Tutorial.

Remote Mentoring? GriPhyN/iVDGL researchers could act as remote mentors for students at MSI using collaborative technologies, e.g. Access Grid, VRVS, etc
