Responded to Change with Imagination Looked back to their innocent youth with Nostalgia Often wrote of a dream world that was more pastoral and innocent than the real world. Some looked back to legend and myth for inspiration. Found beauty in the small, ordinary things

The Romantics saw Poetry as a way to reveal deeper Truths through metaphor and symbolism. Romantic poets also sought a new audience – the common man. They used slang or common language. Sometimes, though, they used more archaic language when writing of legend or the past.

Romantics eschewed the strict formality of classical and neo-classical poetry. They sought freer forms of line and verse. However, they still mostly followed a set rhyme scheme and meter.
