Colonization A process of establishing a community in a distant location supported by another country. The 13 colonies were England’s attempt to begin colonization in North America. EnglandNorth America

Settlement A new community created as people come to a new area and build homes and businesses.

Imperialism The process where countries capture or take control of other lands around the world.

Joint Stock Company A group of investors that give money to a project in order to make a profit.

Charter An agreement made between investor and colonist on the way the colony will operate.

Proprietary Colony A colony owned by one person. William Penn owned Pennsylvania so he was the proprietor.

Mercantilism The mother country makes a profit from her colonies’ businesses.

Pilgrims Anyone who comes from far away.

Indentured Servant A person that promises service to a family or individual in return for passage to the New World.

Diversity Having a lot of variety

Plantation A very large farm usually worked by slaves in the south.

Great Awakening A time when colonists began to participate again in religious meetings; a shared colonial experience.

Apprentice A person who works with an expert for a period of time to learn a trade.

Puritans A religious group that believed in a pure relationship with God.
