PIEDMONT Means foot of the mountain. Encompasses nearly 1/3 rd of the state. Rapidly flowing creeks and rivers. Rolling hills and valleys with moderate slopes. Soil is red and yellow clay

SANDHILLS Extends along the fall line. Contains the red hills. Mostly sandy soil Long leaf pine and scrubby oaks Fruits and vegetables are grown here.

INNER COASTAL PLAIN Fertile soil Location of cotton plantations Carolina Bays - oval depressions in swamps Because of sediment that settled in the ocean millions of years ago over the Coastal Plains, there is a lot of Sedimentary Rock in this area.

OUTER COASTAL PLAIN Rivers meander through broad flood plains Location of rice and indigo plantations Lakes and swamps. Movie on Inner and Outer coastal plains

COASTAL ZONE It borders the Atlantic Ocean. It has sand dunes. Marshlands, inlets, bays, barrier islands. It has Palmetto and Palm trees. It has beaches. It is often battered by hurricanes.
