LAB EQUIPMENT SAFETY
On lab days there will most likely be equipment on your lab table or on the counters around the classroom. This may be as simple as a ruler and scissors.
The rule is:
Students should NOT touch any equipment, even
scissors, until they have been given instructions
about the lab and how to use the equipment.
If you do not understand a direction or part of a
lab procedure ask the teacher BEFORE
proceeding.

In labs involving chemicals:
Students must wash their hands with soap and water after every laboratory exploration
to remove any chemical residue that may have transferred during the lab.

No food, drinks, or gum in lab, unless it is a food lab, and those items will be provided by the teacher.
Never use cracked or broken glassware.
Tell the teacher if you break glassware and dispose of it in the broken glassware box. Do not pick it up with your bare hands.

NEVER leave a flame burning unattended.
Before you leave your table, the flame should be extinguished.
In the event of a fire, immediately notify the teacher.

16. GENERAL LAB SAFETY
Students with long hair need to tie it back before they enter the lab. Also you must have on closed-toe shoes and your jewelry cannot dangle (hang or swing).
If a lab calls for the use of eye goggles such as labs using chemicals, heat or glassware, you must wear them over your eyes at all times.

26. CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY
In the event that we use chemicals during an investigation, the teacher will instruct you on how to dispose of them at the end of class.
Students are expected to follow those directions completely to avoid improperly dumping chemicals.
Hot glassware looks identical to cold glassware. Use beaker tongs or test tube holders when you are picking up heated glass.
As you know, glass is fragile (easily broken). Please be extraordinarily careful when handling glass. Report broken glass IMMEDIATELY!
