8 CORNELL NOTES

9 NOW COMPLETE QUESTION #1
LAB EQUIPMENT SAFETY On lab days there will most likely be equipment on your lab table or on the counters around the classroom. This may be as simple as a ruler and scissors. The rule is: Students should NOT touch any equipment, even scissors, until they have been given instructions about the lab and how to use the equipment. If you do not understand a direction or part of a lab procedure ask the teacher BEFORE proceeding.

10 Complete Question #2 CONDUCT DURING LABS
Students are responsible for maintaining a safe environment in the lab. Horseplay, playing around during lab will increase your chances of getting hurt and WILL NOT be tolerated. It is against the rules. Students will be subject to the following discipline: 1. Demerit 2. ZERO on the lab with NO MAKEUP 3. Phone call home

11 SAFETY SITUATION #1 The teacher was not in the room yet. Juan began weighing chemicals, touching them with his hands. His nose itched, so he rubbed it. Is there anything wrong with this situation? Turn and talk.

12 BEING SAFE DURING A LAB Many labs come with an outlined lab procedure and may include additional rules not previously covered. Make sure that you follow the lab procedures and rules step by step at all times during the experiment. Ask the teacher if you do not understand the instructions.

13 BEING SAFE- WASHING HANDS
In labs involving chemicals: Students must wash their hands with soap and water after every laboratory exploration to remove any chemical residue that may have transferred during the lab.

14 MORE SAFETY RULES No food, drinks, or gum in lab, unless it is a food lab, and those items will be provided by the teacher. Never use cracked or broken glassware. Tell the teacher if you break glassware and dispose of it in the broken glassware box. Do not pick it up with your bare hands.

15 SAFETY RULES CONTINUED…
NEVER leave a flame burning unattended. Before you leave your table, the flame should be extinguished. In the event of a fire, immediately notify the teacher. Do not attempt to put it out.

16 GENERAL LAB SAFETY Students with long hair need to tie it back before they enter the lab. Also you must have on closed-toe shoes and your jewelry cannot dangle (hang or swing). If a lab calls for the use of eye goggles such as labs using chemicals, heat or glassware, you must wear them over your eyes at all times.

17 DO NOW: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO WEAR THIS TYPE OF GEAR DURING A LAB???
Goggles, gloves and aprons

18 LAB EQUIPMENT… WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT DOES

19 CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING
Quiz your elbow partner: 1. Is it okay to make up our own lab procedure if I don’t understand? Yes or no. What should I do? 2. I just did a lab with Advil and vinegar. Do I have to wash my hands? Why or why not?

20 Why is it important not to NEVER
touch, taste, smell, or eat chemicals unless it is part of the WRITTEN lab instructions? .

21 Homework Get your Lab Safety contract signed

23 SWBAT: Explain what it means to be safe in a science lab by writing a 3-5 sentence summary based on the text.

24 Is there anything wrong with what Kevin did? Turn and talk.
SAFETY SITUATION #1 Kevin didn’t eat breakfast. It was at least 2 hours still lunch and he was hungry. The lab was only using water and some other chemical so he decided to quickly eat his sandwich while the teacher’s back was turned. Is there anything wrong with what Kevin did? Turn and talk.

25 CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY NEVER
touch, taste, smell, or eat chemicals unless it is part of the WRITTEN lab instructions. ANYTHING can be hazardous. Even if you think that a chemical is safe, don’t take the chance. NEVER use lab equipment (beakers, etc.) as containers for food or drink.

26 CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY In the event that we use chemicals during an investigation, the teacher will instruct you on how to dispose of them at the end of class. Students are expected to follow those directions completely to avoid improperly dumping chemicals. Hot glassware looks identical to cold glassware. Use beaker tongs or test tube holders when you are picking up heated glass. As you know, glass is fragile (easily broken). Please be extraordinarily careful when handling glass. Report broken glass IMMEDIATELY! Please report all accidents to the teacher IMMEDIATELY!

27 CHEMICAL LAB SAFETY Spilled chemicals can be potentially dangerous if left unattended. Keep your area neat and tidy. Report chemical spills IMMEDIATELY so that the teacher may clean them up properly. The lab equipment is to be used for the scheduled classroom experiment only. Do not deviate from the experiment. Do not substitute or add steps or chemicals to an experiment. Do not perform unauthorized experiments at any time. Do not work in the lab if the teacher is not present.

28 Is there anything wrong with what Cindy did? Turn and talk.
SAFETY SITUATION #2 Cindy was heating a test tube. She didn’t put on goggles since she was already wearing glasses. She slanted the tube away from her work area, but toward students on the opposite side of her lab table. Is there anything wrong with what Cindy did? Turn and talk.

29 If a lab calls for using an animal.
ANIMAL LAB SAFETY If a lab calls for using an animal. Don’t open the cage if you don’t have permission. Don’t tease the animal. Report any animal bites or scratches to the teacher

30 DISSECTION/LIFE SCIENCE
When using a sharp object in science class such as dissecting scissors or a scalpel: Cut away from you and others. Remember, don’t remove anything from the lab. Carry microscope with both hands.

31 TRUE/FALSE QUIZ YOUR ELBOW PARTNER!
Wear safety glasses or goggles when instructed. Do not remove safety glasses or goggles during an experiment. You can leave your work area dirty. The next class can clean it up. Never open storage cabinets without permission from the teacher. Long hair can be tucked behind your ear, but you can’t wear dangling jewelry, or loose or baggy clothing.

32 On a half sheet of paper, use RADD to explain at least three ways to be safe in the lab based on the video. Lab Safety

33 Homework 1. Write a proficient 3-5 sentence summary of your Cornell Notes. 2. Circle what is wrong in the lab safety picture in red and what is right in green. Proficiency is 80% correct.
