Deaf Awareness Week Occurs yearly, during the last full week of September. The purpose of Deaf Awareness Week is to draw attention to deaf people, their accomplishments and their issues.

Ideas, ASL 3-4 Deaf, Deaf world Make & present posters (Deaf culture & history- ASL 3-4 ): –Navigating a sign environment (getting someone’s attention, passing between signers, rude & polite behavior around deaf, etc.) –Famous D/deaf people –Deaf history timeline –The 5 parameters & deaf poetry/stories –Political issues past & present (cochlear implants, oral vs. manual education debate) –Deaf sports & athletes –Deaf arts (visual & performance) http://www2.bakersfieldcollege.edu/tmoran/asl1%20posters.htm

Ideas, ASL 1-2 Make & present posters (basic info on Deaf & ASL- ASL 1-2 ): –Many different sign languages throughout the world –Iconic sign art –Communication strategies between deaf/hearing (gesture, drawing, writing, using an interpreter) –Difficulty of lipreading for the Deaf (30% on lips, no memory of sound) –Polite ways to get a Deaf person’s attention –Devices for adaptation & accommodation
