Year 4 Term 6 Vicious Vikings Through our learning journey... as historians we will look further into the world of the Vikings. We will look at the way they travelled, how they fought and what life was like in their longhouse communities. We will carry out research to discover more detail of why they invaded other countries. We hope to use some Computing sessions to further our knowledge of the Vikings and what life was like for them. As artists we will be studying the work of the locally known artist Marc Chagall and recreating their work. We will then apply the style of this artist to create our own design linked to our continued Viking topic learning. In PE we will continue to be supported by the Sports Partnership for athletics in the lead up to Sport’s day. We will also be practising striking and fielding games such as Rounders where good team play, sportsmanship and communication skills can be developed. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD HAS KIT IN SCHOOL. As mathematicians our learning will develop our understanding of position and direction using coordinates and compass points. We will revisit our learning on time as well as how to apply methods to solve problems involving money. We hope to improve our understanding of fractions, percentages and decimals too. As writers we will be broadening our vocabulary through poetry. We will spend time focusing on the work of a particular poet so we can write in a style to develop a poetry style of our own. We will link some of our English work to our science work by discussing, through speaking and listening activities as well as written work, what could be done to improve our school environment. As scientists we shall continue to study all living things around us by identifying them and classifying them with accuracy. We will spend some time looking at how habitats change throughout the world.

Year 4 – Parent Information Homework: We will hand out homework and spellings for the week on a Wednesday and expect it to be handed in on the following Monday. For the Viking Topic the Homework task sheet from term 5 is continuing. We would like to emphasise the importance of homework and reading at home. The school expects all children to complete it regularly. Spellings this term will be based on words from the revised curriculum that children of this age should know both the spelling and meaning of. We hope this will continue to support both their reading and writing skills in turn. Practise of times tables and spellings is also expected to take place for a short time each week in a way that suits your child. The vicious Vikings topic will continue into term 6 through many areas of our learning. We have already seen some great homework creations coming in to school during term 5 so we look forward to seeing what else is to come.
