3 New Federalism  Reduce the size of the Federal government  Revenue- Sharing: Bills granting federal funds to state and local agencies  He wanted to continue with many of Johnson's Great Society programs  Welfare’s system- Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)

4 Foreign Policy  Henry Kissinger- former Harvard professor…foreign policy consultant Nixon Doctrine: both shared many views to abandon Vietnam War….. The policy of Vietnamization became known as Nixon Doctrine…. They will continue proving aid to Allies but the U.S. will not longer be primarily involved. New Policy of Détente: policy that attempts to relax or ease tensions between nations, such as the U.S. and the USSR and China. - They believe that negotiating with the Communist was a better way to achieve what they wanted.

5 US and USSR Tensions Ease American-Soviet Summit- or high level diplomatic meeting, to be held in May 1972 Nixon flew to Moscow for a weeklong summit. Two superpowers signed: (SALT I): 1. Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (SALT I): a plan for two nations had been working on for yrs. - the treaty froze the amount of strategic nuclear weapons. - Agreed to increase trade and the exchange of scientific information 2. Helsinki Accords- US, Canada and most countries of Eastern/ Western Europe committed to 3 sets of recommendations focusing on security, economic, and human rights issues.
