As with fractions, to add or subtract rational expressions with unlike, or different denominators, you must rewrite with a common denominator before adding or subtracting.

You must place the subtracted quantity in parentheses! The problem. Write the denominators as prime factors. Multiply numerator and denominator by factors needed to create a common denominator. Multiply to write the expression with a common denominator. Simplify.
