survey results In April and May, over 900 people were interviewed. –Crossroads Urban Center emergency food pantry clients –Central City residents

demographics 62.8% of food pantry clients are completely uninsured. 24.3% have been kicked off a government health insurance program due to paperwork issues

key findings 69% of families have had to skip a meal or go to an emergency food pantry because of medical expenses. 70.8% have had to go without needed medical care due to their inability to afford it.

What can be done? Hospitals can adopt charity care and fair billing practices. The local government can review contracts with ambulance companies and other healthcare providers to ensure they promote decent billing practices. The state government can expand access to healthcare programs so more low income Utahns can afford basic care, and pass legislation requiring hospitals to follow fair billing practices.
