Roman Houses Roman country houses were called villas. It was easy to tell if a Roma was rich or poor by the size and the material the house was made of; poor Romans had houses made of wood, rich Romans had houses made of stone and often had mosaic floors. Mosaics are patterns made of small stone tiles. Romans invented plumbing and under floor heating. The lighting was by oil lamps.
