Pre-Class Monday 11-19-12 What do you think Chemical Engineers do?

Chemical Engineering Emphasis on chemistry and the chemical nature of products and processes

Background  Take what chemists do in the lab and apply fundamental engineering principles to it for societal use  Design, develop, and operate large-scale production facilities (2 out of 3 work for manufacturing industry)  Work with process to ensure safe handling of reliable chemical products  Typically, the highest paid engineer with a Bachelor’s degree only ($64,902)

Penny Drops  Materials 2 pennies Paper towels 2 pennies Paper towels 2 pipettes Beakers 2 pipettes Beakers  Procedures Find the number of drops of water that will fit on a penny. Find the number of drops of water that will fit on a penny. Find the number of drops of isopropyl alcohol that will fit on a penny. Find the number of drops of isopropyl alcohol that will fit on a penny.  Conclusions Based on your results, describe the differences between the materials. Based on your results, describe the differences between the materials. How could this information help with handling the liquids? How could this information help with handling the liquids? Give three reasons why your results may be different than other groups. Give three reasons why your results may be different than other groups.

Pre-Class Tuesday 11-20-12 The Forest Art Gallery has been robbed. The police suspect well- known art thief Kenny Kangaroo. Max Mouse was at the museum and snapped a photo that seems to confirm his guilt. But, Slylock Fox insists the police are pursuing the wrong suspect. Why?

American Institute of Chemical Engineers  Catalysis and Reaction Engineering  Computing and Systems Technology  Engineering and Construction Contracting  Environmental  Food, Pharmaceutical, and Bioengineering  Forest Products  Fuels and Petrochemicals  Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion  Management  Nuclear Engineering  Petroleum Engineering  Safety and Health

Environmental Engineering  Applies science in the pursuit of making the world a safer place for humans and animals  Formerly known as sanitary engineering  Involves three main areas: Disposal: disposal and processing of industrial and residential waste (similar to Civil) Disposal: disposal and processing of industrial and residential waste (similar to Civil) Remediation: cleaning up of a contaminated site Remediation: cleaning up of a contaminated site Prevention: design process to reduce or eliminate harmful waste (most common area of Environmental) Prevention: design process to reduce or eliminate harmful waste (most common area of Environmental)

Chromatography an analytical technique for separating and identifying mixtures that are or can be colored, especially pigments

Pre-Class Monday 11-26-12 List three branches, recognized by AIChE, of Chemical Engineering.

Separating Liquids  Materials Test Tubes (2) Test Tubes (2) Test Tube Rack Test Tube Rack Isopropyl alcohol Isopropyl alcohol Vegetable oil Vegetable oil Food Coloring Food Coloring  Answer questions upon completion of Procedures Did the food coloring and vegetable oil have the same bond type? Explain. Did the food coloring and vegetable oil have the same bond type? Explain. Did the food coloring and isopropyl alcohol have the same bond type? Explain. Did the food coloring and isopropyl alcohol have the same bond type? Explain.  Procedures Obtain 2 test tubes and 1 test tube rack. Wipe out test tube with paper towel. Add 3 pipettes of water to 1 test tube (~1/3 full). Add 3 pipettes of oil (slowly) to test tube. Raise your hand and I will add food coloring to it. Observe and record. Repeat above steps using new test tube, new pipette, and isopropyl alcohol. Rinse test tube with water and wipe dry.

Nuclear Engineering  Study nuclear energy and radiation and their beneficial uses  Most work at nuclear plants to design, run, observe, and improve the reactor’s efficiency and safe operation  Concerned mostly with electricity production, propulsion systems, waste disposal, and radiation applications

Nuclear Technical Divisions  Biology and Medicine  Decommissioning, Decontamination, and Reutilization  Education and Training  Environmental Sciences  Fuel Cycle and Waste Management  Fusion Energy  Human Factors  Isotopes and Radiation  Materials Science and Technology  Mathematics and Computations  Nuclear Critically Safety  Nuclear Operations  Nuclear Installations Safety  Power  Radiation Protection and Shielding  Reactor Physics

Pre-Class Tuesday 11-27-12 Write: “Guest speaker: Dr Adam from Dynetics”

Types of Nuclear Decay  Alpha Decay Alpha particle is made of 2 protons and 2 neutrons Alpha particle is made of 2 protons and 2 neutrons  Beta Decay Beta particle is an electron given off during decay Beta particle is an electron given off during decay Loses a neutron and gains a proton Loses a neutron and gains a proton  Gamma Decay Most penetrating form of radiation Most penetrating form of radiation Transmutation – the process when one element becomes another through radioactive decay

Fission (to divide) Fusion (to combine)  Fission is the process of splitting a nucleus into two smaller masses  Nuclear reactors use controlled chain reactions to convert nuclear energy into electrical energy  Used in nuclear weapons  Fusion is the process of combining two smaller masses into one larger nucleus  The sun uses thermonuclear fusion to radiate energy outwards

Wednesday 11-28-12  In general, there are three types of radioactive decay: alpha, beta, and gamma. Which is the most deadly and useful to humans?

Petroleum Engineer  Maintain the flow of petroleum in a safe and reliable manner  They are involved in (working with many different groups): Exploration of crude oil Removal of the oil Transporting the oil Refining the oil  Designs, develops, and operates the equipment to process the petroleum into the end product

Fossil Fuels  Petroleum (crude oil) A flammable fluid produced from decaying animals in high pressure and temperature over a long period of time Mined from underground  Natural Gas Petroleum that has been turned in to a gas Always found with petroleum, underground  Coal A brittle solid produced from decaying plants in high pressure and temperature over a long period of time Mined from underground

Fossil Fuel Power Plant

Nuclear Power Plant

Pre-Class Thursday 11-29-12 Write down one similarity and one difference between fossil fuel reactors and nuclear reactors.

Renewable Sources of Energy  Solar  Hydroelectric  Tidal  Wind  Geothermal

Pre-class Friday 11-30-12 Write: “Studying for written test.” Don’t forget to turn-in your Pre- classes for the week!

Pre-Class Wednesday 11-10-10 In the first lab yesterday, how was the “harmful” lead removed from the mixture/compound?
