The Fall of Rome After the was empire divided, power shifted to the East Trade declined and Rome was unable to afford a large army. This left Rome vulnerable to attack 410 C.E./A.D. – Rome is conquered by barbarians The time between the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the Renaissance is often called “The Dark Ages”

Barbarian Invasions Barbarians—any people who lived outside the borders of the Roman Empire or people who did not speak Latin Invasions by Angles, Saxons, Magyars, and Vikings disrupted the social, economic, and political order of Europe
