ACCT-IGD-3. Students will examine the professional and ethical issues involved in the graphics and design industry. By: Michael Simmons

 Ethics – a set of moral principles or values that govern behavior  Personal decisions of what is right and wrong  Personal morals & values

 No!  It is illegal to drive over the speed limit (law), but some people don’t see this as unethical (personal value).

 Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.

 It is a provision of the copyright which allows a person to reproduce a part of copyrighted materials without permission of the copyright owner.

 The material being copied must be used for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research.

 the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes  the nature of the copyrighted work  the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole  the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work (this is considered to be the most important factor)

 You are creating an advertisement for a graphics project and you find a neat picture on the internet. Can you use it?  If it is for a class project, yes.  However, to avoid plagiarism, you do need to provide a reference to the website from which the picture came. When you incorporate someone else's work into yours - words, graphics, etc. - it is extremely important to give credit to who created the work.

 Can I post the project on the internet?  Yes, with caution. Here you must cite where you got the pictures.  www.images.google.com – is NOT where you got the picture from. Go to the web site that houses the picture and give the credit from there.

 A friend of mine wants to buy my project and use it as the flyer for his business. Can I do that?  NO – you are not allowed to make money off the art work unless you get written permission from the creator to use it.

 When in doubt, leave it out or don’t use it.  Always cite all sources.

 A public domain work is a creative work that is not protected by copyright and which may be freely used by everyone.  Works may not be protected if: 1. the term of copyright for the work has expired 2. the author failed to satisfy statutory formalities to perfect the copyright 3. the work is a work of the U.S. Government
