Notes 3.4 Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers Use the following steps to add and subtract mixed numbers: Add or subtract the fractions. Add or subtract the whole numbers. Simplify when possible. When you subtract mixed numbers, the fractional part of the second number may be larger than the fractional part of the first number. In such cases you should regroup or borrow.

Examples: 1) 1 3/5 + 3 3/5 = 4 6/5 = 5 1/5 2) 5 4/7 – 2 3/7 = 3 1/7 3) 5½ + 3¾ = 4) 6 5/8 – 4¼ = 5 2/4 + 3¾ = 6 5/8 – 4 2/8 = 8 5/4 = 9¼ 2 3/8 5) 5 – 2¼ = 6) 5 5/12 – 1 11/12 = 4 4/4 – 2¼ = *4 17/12 – 1 11/12 = 2¾ 3 6/12 = 3½ * borrow 1 from the 5. To get the new fraction, add the 5 & 12 and put it over 12.
