The Apprenticeship Model within the University Structure? Kelly O’Briant
2
Apprenticeship: Fosters growth of an artist well versed in making with in one area, and running a studio and business in that area. Less room for experimentation, more specific to materials and practicalities of studio More one on one time with mentor, limited exposure but students gleans from the “how” Simon Levin and Kenyon Hanson
3
University Experience: Timing may be arbitrary to the students creative process Conceptual and Contextual Ideas, Interdisciplinary Multiple people to bounce ideas on Room to experiment Exposure to lots of different artists, not necessarily “how" to get there. Samantha Henneke and Val Cushing
4
Mentoring is embedded in ceramic culture: One on one Involves transmission of information and experience, insight, inspiration and values Can happen in the university or an apprenticeship
5
Situated Cognition: Learning within the activity or context for which the knowledge will continue to be used or is specific for. What is learned should be integral to how it is learned. Judith Duff, Cedar Mtn., NC
6
Cognitive Apprenticeship: Applying the roles of apprentice and master or student and mentor to large context of education. Model strategies for students in authentic activity + support them in doing tasks= empower students to work independently. Set up university studio in way that allows students to take part in tasks essential to running independent studio later.
7
Conceptual and Technical: University = conceptual growth, originality, creativity, experimental, interdisciplinary. Apprenticeship = skill and material growth, studio practice/discipline, functional knowledge of space and business, usually one medium.
8
Art as Experience: Align learning skill and craftsmanship with academia Shape experience in order to promote aesthetic learning Experience of materials and skill acquired simultaneously.
9
Hybrid Structures: University of the Arts in Philadelphia Kansas State Haywood Community College, NC Berea College, KT
10
Scenarios: Mentor: visiting artist, resident artist, professor, local community artist Separate space: separate area in studio, separate studio shared by students and visiting artist, professors’ or community artists’ personal studio One on one Shared experience, both parties involved in all aspects of running studio Extended period of time: semester or year.
