1. What do you consider the ultimate evil? Why?

2. The Ultimate Evil What do you consider the ULTIMATE evil? In your final you looked at prejudice, hatred, violence and jealousy but those things are only some of the evils in the world. Describe, in detail, what you consider to be the most abhorrent thing in the world. Explain why. You should be seething just thinking about it.

3. The shadow We spent last semester examining good and evil. –According to archetypes evil is the shadow, the element that is dark. In your own life – what is your shadow? Is it a person, an inner conflict, a weakness? –Describe it in detail.

4. Shadow The Shadow is the opposite of light and provides the tension of anxiety and fear in the story. The Shadow is often opposes the hero and is typically the main antagonist. They may also be people who provide obstacles along the way, although not as a guardian. The hero must struggle with the Shadow, somehow overcoming the opposition they provide. The shadow also represents the darker side of our own nature, as in Jung's Archetypes, and it is disquieting to recognize them as somehow related to ourselves.

5. Shadow Story is only as good as its villain. Can function as mentors. They are deliciously sinister b/c of their qualities. They are humans which makes the choice to destroy them a moral one. Internal v external shadow

6. Create a nemesis Using the descriptions that you have just written of the ultimate evil and your personal shadow, create a nemesis (villain) for your life story. What is it that you (the hero) is battling against? Give this shadow physical form. You can draw and label, you can give a character description, the choice is yours. Reminder - in The Power of One, Peekay has the Judge and loneliness, in Othello, Othello has Iago and jealousy to contend with. Think along those lines.

7. Take a look back On the handout provided - –Describe how Peekay serves as a hero who goes against an unfair system. He is the symbol of equality and unity. List all the themes that you remember from the unit. –Explore how Othello exemplifies the “tragic hero”. List all the character traits and themes that you can remember.

8. Homework due Feb 9/10 Read and take notes on the introduction in Beowulf. Notes will be stamped and collected.
