21/10/2015 Using the reactivity series TP - WALT Demonstrate the R.S. Using Water, oxygen and acid

21/10/2015 Reactions of metals with oxygen When a metal reacts with oxygen it will form a METAL OXIDE. This is what happens when a metal rusts. We can make this reaction happen quicker by burning the metal. METAL + OXYGEN METAL OXIDE Copy and complete the following reactions: 1)Magnesium + oxygen 2)Copper + oxygen 3)Calcium + oxygen 4)Iron + oxygen

21/10/2015 Reactions of metals with water When a metal reacts with water hydrogen is always given off. The other product will be either a metal hydroxide or a metal oxide. Copy and complete the following reactions: 1)Sodium + water 2)Potassium + water 3)Calcium + water 4)Iron + steam METAL + WATER METAL OXIDE + HYDROGEN METAL + WATERMETAL HYDROXIDE + HYDROGEN

21/10/2015 Reactions of metals with acids When a metal reacts with an acid it gives off hydrogen (which can be “popped” using a lit splint). The other product is a salt. Copy and complete the following reactions: 1)Calcium + hydrochloric acid 2)Zinc + hydrochloric acid 3)Iron + hydrochloric acid 4)Lithium + sulphuric acid METAL + ACID SALT + HYDROGEN e.g. magnesium + hydrochloric acid magnesium chloride + hydrogen

21/10/2015 Complete the following reactions: 1)Lithium + water 2)Lithium + hydrochloric acid 3)Silver + oxygen 4)Magnesium + sulphuric acid 5)Potassium + oxygen 6)Aluminium + oxygen 7)Manganese + water 8)Sodium + sulphuric acid 9)Lithium + oxygen 10)Nickel + hydrochloric acid Lithium hydroxide + hydrogen Lithium chloride + hydrogen Silver oxide Magnesium sulphate + hydrogen Potassium oxide Aluminium oxide Manganese oxide + hydrogen Sodium sulphate + hydrogen Lithium oxide Nickel chloride + hydrogen

21/10/2015 An example question on reactivity MetalReaction with dilute acid Reaction with water Reaction with oxygen A Some reactionSlow reactionBurns brightly B No reaction Reacts slowly C No reaction D Violent reactionSlow reactionBurns brightly E Reasonable reaction Reacts with steam only Reacts slowly

21/10/2015 The Reactivity Series The Reactivity Series lists metals in order of reactivity: Potassium Sodium Calcium Magnesium Aluminium Carbon Zinc Iron Lead Copper Silver Gold

Measuring the reactivity of metals and acid 21/10/2015 TP – WALT Display the increasing reactivity of metals using acid and measuring temperature WILF – Complete expt Questions answered

21/10/2015 When metals are placed in acid, a salt and hydrogen are produced When they react, energy is also released in the form of heat The more reactive the metal, the more heat is released during the reaction

Apparatus 21/10/2015 Various metals (Magnesium, Copper, lead, iron and calcium) Hdrochloric Acid Test tubes/ Test tube rack Thermometer

Method 21/10/2015 1)Measure 10 mls Hydrolchloric Acid 2)Take the temperature 3)Take a small piece of metal 4)Add metal to the acid 5)Wait until the reaction has finished 6)Take the temperature again and calculate the difference

Measuring the reactivity of metals and acid 21/10/2015 MetalTemperatur e Before (C) Temperatur e After (C) Temperature Difference (C) Iron Magnesium Copper Calcium Lead

Questions, Questions 21/10/2015 1)Place your metals in order of releasing heat, with those that released the most at the top 2)How does this compare to your reactivity series that you have in your books 3)For each of the reactions, write a word equation
