1 DEALING WITH BULLIES

2 IT’S NOT A JOKE Bullying is a very serious issue that each one of you will most likely encounter at some point in your life. Even if it does not happen to you directly, you may see others being bullied. This presentation is meant to give you the necessary tools to properly handle a bullying situation, in or outside of school, while also teaching you the importance of respect for others.

3 WHAT IS A BULLY? A person who intentionally harms someone else
Physically Hitting, kicking, punching, etc. Verbally Teasing, name-calling, mocking, etc. Psychologically Shunning, ignoring, spreading rumors, etc. No specific type of person (could be anyone) A bully is a person who intentionally harms someone else, whether it be physically, verbally, or psychologically. Bullying can include hitting, kicking, punching, teasing, name-calling, mock, shunning, ignoring, and even spreading rumors. There is not a specific type of person who bullies others; anyone you know could be a bully.

4 WHO CAN BE A BULLY? People you don’t know very well
Peers Classmates People you know and trust Friends Siblings Parents Teachers Bullies don’t have to be the older and stronger kid in your class. They can be your friends, siblings, parents, or even teachers. Hopefully, you never have to deal with being bullied by the people you trust.

Younger Smaller Weaker Different Personal gain Popularity Control Experience with being bullied themselves People may bully for many reasons. They pick on people who seem like easy targets, such as someone younger, smaller, weaker, or different from them. They may feel like they are gaining popular or control through bullying. Or, they may have experienced being bullied in the past and it is all they know.

8 WHERE DOES BULLYING OCCUR?
School Home/Community Bullying can occur anywhere in your community, but is most commonly found at school or in the home.

9 HOW TO DEFEAT BULLYING DO… Tell an adult Walk away
Avoid the bully if possible Avoid the things that trigger bullying Talk out the issues Show respect DON’T… Blame yourself Feel ashamed Respond with violence Try to handle a potentially dangerous situation alone Here is a list of what to do and not to do when facing a bully situation. Do tell an adult, walk away, avoid the bully and the things that cause them to bully you, try to talk out your problems, and show respect. Do not blame yourself for the bullying or feel ashamed for being in the situation. Also, never respond with more violence or try to handle a potentially dangerous situation alone. Get help!

10 REMEMBER… Bullying is any sort of action that harms you physically, verbally, or psychologically. Anyone can be a bully, so don’t be afraid to tell someone about it – even if it is a parent or adult. Bullying occurs because of an overall lack of respect, which can happen anywhere in your community. If you are feeling bullied, don’t bully back. Try to talk it out with the bully or talk to an adult if you feel you need help.

11 IN CLASS ASSIGNMENT Two students will come to the front of the room (one “victim” and one “bully”) to act out a bullying situation. The “victim” will practice a safe way to approach the “bully,” using the information learned in class. Switch roles! Every will get a turn, so be prepared! This in class assignment will help test your learned knowledge of the presented class material.

12 HOMEWORK In a few sentences, answer the following questions on a piece of loose leaf to be turned in tomorrow. Have you ever been bullied? Have you ever bullied someone else? Have you ever witnessed someone else being bullied? How did you respond to each of these incidents? This homework will hopefully help you realize how you feel and how others feel about bullying.
