I. Life in Ancient Rome -Romans admired Greeks & borrowed from them A) Roman Art & Architecture= -Roman statues were more realistic -Romans 1 st to use arches -invented & 1 st to use concrete -Colosseum- seat 60,000 people

B) Roman science & engineering -Galen= emphasized study of anatomy -Ptolemy= mapped over 1,000 stars -studied the motion of planets & stars -Engineers built roads to all parts of the empire -built aqueducts to carry water into city -built sewage removal system C) Daily Life= -Rome was dirty, noisy, & crowded -people threw trash out of windows onto the street below

-families lived in one room apartments -poorly built apartments often burned -Government provided “bread & circuses” -gladiator fights etc. -Forum= center of town that served as marketplace & public square 1) Family Life= -extended families lived together -father was in charge of entire family -boys became men when they were between 14 & 16 -women became adults when they married -marriages were arranged

D) Spartacus= -gladiator who led revolt -70,000 slaves defeat several Roman legions -Spartacus & 6,000 others were crucified E) Religion= -borrowed religion from Greece -changed names of the gods -allowed other religions to exist as long as they didn’t threaten the gov’t

II. Decline of Rome -gov’t was corrupt -people were getting poorer -soldiers began seizing crops & destroying fields -less food & people grew hungrier -people spent less money -plague took 1/10 of Roman pop. -other armies began to invade Rome

A) Constantine= Roman general became emperor in A.D. 312 -issued reforms to change Rome -didn’t completely work -he moved capital to Byzantium & named it Constantinople -now is Istanbul B) Rome Falls= A.D. 476 -many European peoples came for protection & eventually conquered Romans

C) Legacy of Rome= -U.S. got many ideas a/b gov’t & laws as well as language -Rule of law, innocent until proven guilty -Republican form of gov’t -animals & plants classified by Latin names
