PRESENTING CORRECT BIBLIOGRAPHIES SOMETIMES CALLED REFERENCING Partly based on Graham Taylor’s presentation from Unley High School

What Is Referencing? It is the formal acknowledgment of the work of others It shows you are an effective & ethical researcher & that you are ICT literate It improves the quality & credibility of your work It demonstrates that you are engaged in real learning With practice it becomes second nature

Why Use Referencing? To show you have gathered information from a range of sources To demonstrate your ability to evaluate/synthesise information To support your argument To allow the reader to follow up interesting information and to check the facts for him/herself To give credit where it is due

When do you Reference? We can use other people’s work in a number of ways: Quoting exact words Copying figures, tables etc Paraphrasing in your own words but using their ideas Summarising their ideas Each time you do this: Identify the other person’s contribution in the text as a footnote AND in the bibliography at the end

What If You Don’t Reference? It is called plagiarism because it is taking someone else’s work and claiming it is your own People who plagiarise are losers Plagiarism is considered a serious offence, which incurs serious consequences

Tips for managing your Reference sources Record the reference information as you research Add to the bibliography as you go and avoid this situation  Format & sort alphabetically by author’s surname at the end

How do you write a Correct Bibliography It is placed at the end of the assignment & must include all References you looked at. (Whether you used the information or not) It must include these items in this order –Author’s surname followed by initials or first name –Title (in italics or underlined) –Place of publication (City) –Publisher –Year of publication
