"A covenant is a binding contract between two parties, both of whom have obligations specified in the covenant." (Fee and Stuart. 150) Israel God’s chosen people Separated from the world as a nation - The Law 613 Commands Toward God Toward Others National / Civil God To understand the laws themselves, we must understand the nature of this covenant. The New Testament (as well as the United States Constitution) provides for the separation of church and state (civil government) (Matthew 22:15-22; John 18:33-36). But Old Testament Israel was a theocracy; church and state were combined. The Law told them how to worship God (e.g., Leviticus chapters 1 - 7), but it also organized their armies for war (e.g., Numbers chapter 2). Old Testament law was very different from our civil law today. Most modern nations have a huge body of law intended to regulate every conceivable civil issue. Thus, as society changes, new laws are enacted yearly. The Old Testament "do's" and "don'ts" (e.g., Leviticus 19:9-14) were laws by example. They were intended to teach principles that could be applied to parallel situations. Thus, the Law once given from God to Israel did not have to be amended as society changed. The Law also contained what is called "case law." These were regulations that applied in certain situations (cases) (e.g., Deuteronomy 15:12-17). It is very difficult for us to see why God gave Israel some of its laws. For example, Moses commanded, "You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk." (Deuteronomy 14:21) Why? you might ask. Historians tell us this was a heathen magical practice intended to increase the production of flocks. This was apparently a "for example" law prohibiting Israel from practicing magic as the superstitious pagans around them did (cf. Deuteronomy 18:9-12). You shall keep (Exodus 19:5-6; 24:3-8; Deut. 5:1-3)

A study of The Law That God Gave Through Moses God's essential nature is unchanging and unchangeable (Malachi 3:6; James 1:17), God's law is adapted to man's needs, therefore specific laws have changed in different dispensations (Gen. 6-9; 17:10; Exo 20; Mat. 17:1-5; Heb. 1:1,2; 7:12). There are principles behind the law God gave through Moses which will help us understand God and how to please Him. (Rom. 15:4; Gal. 3:24; 2 Tim 3:15)

1. You shall have no other gods before Me. 2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image. 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. 4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Love Man 5. Honor your father and your mother. 6. You shall not murder. 7. You shall not commit adultery. 8. You shall not steal. 9. You shall not bear false witness. 10. You shall not covet. The last six requirements of the Ten Commandments regulate our relationships with each other. They are summarized by the command "you shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Leviticus 19:18; Romans 13:9) "Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law." (Romans 13:10) These commands spring from and reveal the holy nature of God and are designed to cause His people to share His holy nature (Exodus 19:5-6; Leviticus 19:1-2; Deuteronomy 7:6; 1 Peter 1:15-16; 2:5,9-10). A study of The Law “You Shall Not Covet” The Complete Word Study Dictionary ‏חָמַד‎ - Transliteration: ḥāmad Phonetic Pronunciation:khaw-mad' A verb meaning to take pleasure in, to desire, to lust, to covet, to be desirable, to desire passionately. The verb can mean to desire intensely The word expresses the idea of finding pleasure in something indicates someone beloved or endearing . . . H2530 ָחַמד ḥāmaḏ, ֲחמוָּדה ḥamûḏāh, ֲחֻמָדה ḥamuḏāh: A verb meaning to take pleasure in, to desire, to lust, to covet, to be desirable, to desire passionately. The verb can mean to desire intensely even in its simple stem: the tenth commandment prohibits desiring to the point of coveting, such as a neighbor's house, wife, or other assets (Exo_20:17; cf. Exo_34:24). Israel was not to covet silver or gold (Deu_7:25; Jos_7:21) or the fields and lands of others (Mic_2:2). The word can also express slight variations in its basic meaning: the mountains of Bashan, including Mt. Hermon, looked in envy on the chosen mountains of Zion (Psa_68:16 [17]); the simple fool delighted in his naïve, senseless way of life (Pro_1:22); and a man was not to lust after the beauty of an adulterous woman (Pro_6:25). The word expresses the idea of finding pleasure in something as when Israel took pleasure in committing spiritual fornication among its sacred oaks (Isa_1:29). The passive participle of the simple stem indicates someone beloved or endearing (Isa_53:2) but has a negative meaning in Job_20:20, indicating excessive desiring or craving (cf. Psa_39:11 [12]). The passive stem indicates something that is worthy of being desired, desirable; the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil appeared inviting to make a person wise (Gen_2:9; Gen_3:6; Pro_21:20) but proved to be destructive. The plural of this verbal stem expresses satisfaction or reward for keeping God's Law (Psa_19:10 [11]).

A study of The Law “You Shall Not Covet” Fuels Discontent Philippians 4:11-13 (NKJV) 11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Too often, we spend our lives comparing ourselves to others as we covet where they are and what they have. Paul writes, "We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise" (2 Corinthians 10:12 NIV). Bob James of Paint Rock, Texas, had a problem with stinging ants in his yard. He laid a small circle of poison around their mound. Thinking the tiny granules of poison were food, the ants began to pick them up and carry them throughout the colony. Bob returned later to see how well the poison was working. Hundreds of the stinging ants were carrying the poison down into their mound. Then he noticed a hole in the circle of poison. Some of the poison was moving the opposite way away from the mound. Some smaller, nonstinging ants had found this "food" and were stealing it from their ant neighbors. Thinking they were getting the other ants’ treasure, they unwittingly poisoned themselves. When we see someone with more than we have, we must beware. The hunger to beg, borrow, or steal our way into what is theirs may poison us spiritually. A study of The Law “You Shall Not Covet” God is Concerned with Our Hearts Desires – (Mat 15:18-20) Selfishness – the root of all sin – (Gen. 3:1-6; 2 Tim. 3:1) Covetousness brings disharmony and friction & destroys personal relationships – (Joshua 7:8-26; Kings 21; 2 Sam. 11,12; 2 Tim 6:10) The covetous heart is never satisfied – (Eccl. 5:10) The Hope Health Letter (10/95) included this story: Once upon a time, there was a man who lived with his wife, two small children, and his elderly parents in a tiny hut. He tried to be patient and gracious, but the noise and crowded conditions wore him down. In desperation, he consulted the village wise man. "Do you have a rooster?" asked the wise man. "Yes," he replied. "Keep the rooster in the hut with your family, and come see me again next week." The next week, the man returned and told the wise elder that living conditions were worse than ever, with the rooster crowing and making a mess of the hut. "Do you have a cow?" asked the wise elder. The man nodded fearfully. "Take your cow into the hut as well, and come see me in a week." Over the next several weeks, the man--on the advice of the wise elder--made room for a goat, two dogs, and his brother's children. Finally, he could take no more, and in a fit of anger, kicked out all the animals and guests, leaving only his wife, his children, and his parents. A study of The Law “You Shall Not Covet” What we covet, whether good or bad always becomes our goal in life. If we covet the wrong things, we will have the wrong goals, and we may thus sacrifice things of great value in our effort to attain what has little ultimate and eternal value. Selfishness breeds covetousness, which breeds discontentment, which breeds envy, which breeds anger and bitterness, - which brings about every act of evil imaginable - destroying relationships and ones own soul. If we should gain the whole world and lose our own souls - what have we really gained? What will you give in exchange for your soul? Mat. 16:24-26 Matthew 16:24-26 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
