Ethnography for the Digital Age Amanda Coffey, Bella Dicks, Bruce Mason, Bambo Soyinka Cardiff School of Social Sciences
2
Ethnography for the Digital Age n To develop an integrated digital hypermedia environment for qualitative data collection, management, analysis and authoring n To consider the theoretical, methodological and empirical implications of undertaking ethnographic research that exploits the possibilities of digital technologies
3
Hypermedia Ethnography n Hypertext –Hyperlinking as 1) rhetorical relationships of triples & 2) multi-linear networks n Multimedia –Integration of diverse & multi-semiotic media into a single electronic environment n Hypermedia = hyperlinking + multimedia
4
Ethnographic Research Project n Production and reception of science with/in a science discovery centre n How the centre creates environments and spaces for learning n How children engage with and receive these environments and spaces n The performativity and encoding of science through scripts and texts
5
Multimedia Fieldwork n Written texts, visual and audio data, documentary data * Fieldnotes * Interview recordings and transcripts * Video recordings * Still photography * Soundscapes * Documents and graphics
6
Hypermedia analysis (1) n Data management and archiving n Software issues n Integration of visual, aural and textual data - creating meaningful analytical dialogues n Hyperlinking
7
Hypermedia analysis (2) Three stages of analysis: 1. Familiarisation with entire set of data-records (1 st stage descriptive coding/narratives) 2. Production of hypertextual subsets - interpretations & data-to-data linking (1 st stage hyperlinking) 3. Analysis representation Construction of hypermedia trails – via integration of mini-hypertexts into compete hyperlinked data-set (2 nd stage hyperlinking)
8
Constructing an Ethnographic Hypermedia Environment (EHE) Representation – make decisions about: n Interpretive nodes v. data nodes n Construction of trails – structure & metaphor? Freedom v. control. n Linking in data-records – how? n Navigation & orientation aids – which? n Design – visual, multimodal? n Reader-input facility?
9
Emergent issues n Sequentiality and narratives n Multi-semiotic ethnography n Hyperlinking - going everywhere and nowhere n The multi-skilled ethnographer n Technological issues n Ethical issues n Publishing possibilities and limitations
