4 4 Social capital theorists: Bourdieu the sum of resources, actual or virtual, that accrue to an individual or a group by virtue of possessing a durable network of more or less institutionalised relationships of mutual acquaintance and recognition (Bourdieu & Wacquant 1992: 119)

5 5 Social capital theorists: Coleman the norms, the social networks, and the relationships between adults and children that are of value for the childs growing up. Social capital exists within the family, but also outside the family, in the community. (Coleman 1990: 334)

6 6 Social capital theorists: Putnam social capital refers to features of social organisations, such as trusts, norms and networks, that improve the efficiency of society by facilitating coordinated action (Putnam 1993) features of social life –networks, norms & trusts – that enable participants to act together more effectively (Putnam 1996)
