Bases Produce OH- ions (Hydroxide ions) Bitter taste Slippery Many are crystalline solids Turn litmus paper blue pH 7.1-14 Corrosive Conduct electricity Can cause severe burns or tissue damage

Common Bases Soaps and detergents Baking soda Ammonia Magnesium hydroxide aka Milk of Magnesia Fertilizer Drain cleaner/bleach Tums or other antacids

Indicator- a substance that changes color in the presence of an acid or a base. Ex: Litmus paper pH paper Phenolthalein Phenol Red Cabbage juice
