April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 5 CCSDS Recommended Practices (Magenta Books) are the consensus results of CCSDS community deliberations and provide a way to capture “best” or “state of the art” approaches for applying or using standards Magenta Books may include: –References to sets of standards selected to perform certain applications –Guidelines for standardized processes or “recommended” procedures for accomplishing tasks (how to apply) –Other materials (such as reference models) to assist in the design, use or selection of applicable standards Practices say, “here is how the community recommends that you should carry out or describe this particular kind of operation at present, or how the community recommends that it should be carried out in the future ” Magenta Book Requirements

April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 6 Note that while CCSDS Recommended Standards are often concerned with the technical specifications for hardware and software components required for computer communication across interconnected space mission support networks, a Recommended Practice might specify some set of specific “Application Profiles” of multiple CCSDS (or IEEE/OSI/ANSI/ECCS) standards that are recommended for use in particular mission support configurations “Application Profiles” are in reference to specific Use Case requirements –Example: Network Software – Specific optimal network configuration parameters for a given use case or class of problems Magenta Book Requirements

April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 7 The CCSDS has a three-tiered approach to standards –Adopt –Adapt –Develop Other CCSDS WGs : There's an historical observation that feeds into this discussion: For other CCSDS standards, such as AOS, Prox-1, or TM/TC, there is a much narrower domain of application and hence dramatically fewer use cases –This eases the burden of progressing from a Green Book to a Magenta Book to a Blue Book. It's simply easier because the domain of application is much narrower. –Plus these are point-to-point wireless communications technologies - not truly networked wireless communications. April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 8 Different cost/benefit analysis for space applications as compared to terrestrial –Different set of constraints as well Identification of when we need the standards: –This is a critical strategic issue and will be driven by timeline requirements of the participating agencies. A trade-off exists between early adoption and baseline incorporation of standards with later adoption and the associated advancements anticipated to be incorporated into the evolving/improving standard. –The result is that a decision to delay recommendation of a standard is a potential strategy in the case where there is no urgent need for an immediate decision. –However, a significant advantage of specifying baseline standards is that it allows “initial specification” of an evolving wireless networking product development roadmap. April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 9 For each recommended practice, cast as wide of net as possible to encompass the maximum number or use cases –Solve a general class of wireless networking problem –Use Cases are specifically addressed via Application Profiles Identify which infrastructure and capabilities to have in place first that provide the maximum value to agency Programs and Projects –Identifies which general problems to address first –Identifies the specific use cases for which to first develop Application Profiles Strategies for Success

April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 10 The SOIS Wireless WG will compose two Magenta Books (MB) in 2009 on a parallel development track: –Intra-Spacecraft MB (suggest ESA-lead) –Inventory Management MB (suggest NASA-lead) Schedule is to have IMS Magenta Book ready for Fall, 2009 meetings at ESTEC Discuss target completion date for Spacecraft MB WWG Magenta Book Plan

April-2009CCSDS SOIS Wireless WG 12 Normative has specialized meanings in several academic disciplines. Generically, it means relating to an ideal standard or model. In practice, it has strong connotations of relating to a typical standard or model; a prescriptive meaning (for example, the rules specified in a standard or guideline) A “normative statement” is a opinion or value judgment that (because it is not a statement of fact) cannot be proved or disproved Technical sections 3 to n
