1 NOVEMBER 13-14 I can correctly use quotations. I can demonstrate my knowledge of denotation of TONE words. I can use a dictionary to determine the definition. I can demonstrate comprehension of a text. I can make text connections.

2 Quotations Rule #1 Use quotation marks (“ “) to enclose a direct quotation- a person’s exact words. Example: Melanie said, “This car is making a very strange noise.” – Do NOT use quotation marks for indirect quotations. Example: Stephanie said that she was going to wash the car. [The speaker does not quote Stephanie’s exact words.] Always be sure to place quotation marks at both the beginning and the end of the quote. When 2 or more sentences by the same speaker are quoted together, use only one set of quotation marks. – A direct quote begins with a capital letter. Miss Smith answered, “The rest of the chapter, of course.” – When a quoted sentence is divided into 2 parts by an interrupting expression, the second part begins with a small letter. “I wish,” she said, “that we went to the same school.” GRAMMAR

5 This time our vocabulary words will focus on TONE words. You may use these words to describe how the author feels about the subject they are writing about. Write the following words down in your notebook. 1.Introspective 2.Flippant 3.Poignant 4.Ambivalent 5.Antagonistic VOCABULARY WORDS

6 Divide your paper into 5 sections. – For each of the 5 sections, divide again into four sections. I’ll show you an example in a minute. – In the top left you will write the vocab word – In the top right you will write the definition – In the bottom left you will draw a picture – In the bottom right you will use the word in a sentence (underline the vocab word in the sentence) VOCABULARY TONE AND MOOD WORDS

12 Things to note while reading… – 2 flashbacks What values do the flashbacks express How can those values affect his present – Reread the stories of the boys on page 79. Write the main points of what happened to each boy. – Reread the paragraph on page 81 starting with “Sometimes night has a way….” Write five tone words and five mood words. – Would you eat the crow? What’s worst thing you would eat if you were starving? FINISH CHAPTER 10

13 We are about half way through the novel. Ishmael has experienced several things throughout his journey thus far. On a piece of butcher paper, draw an outline of a body. Following the directions on the hand-out, list emotions/stresses and/or physical traits. Find a quote from the book to support your illustration for emotions/stresses, physical traits. Note how is the human spirit connected to the physical body? How is his culture influencing his identity? Make a connection –text to 1)self, 2)another text, 3)world Present your findings to the class. CHAPTERS 1- 10

14 1.Describe Gasemu and his role in Ishmael’s life. 2.How has Ismael changed from the beginning of the story? What is the significance of this change in his demeanor? 3.Design an alternate book cover for the novel. Make sure you include all important information like the title and author, as well as a symbol that portrays the topics of the book. CHAPTER 11
