Summer 2015 Glenville State College Forensics Science Student and Teacher Post Evaluation Results

STUDENT RESULTS: Program Highlights Significant differences found between this year and last year’s camp in following areas: – AFFILIATION WITH FACULTY INCREASED INTEREST IN COLLEGE – STAY ON CAMPUS INFLUENCE DECISION TO ATTEND COLLEGE – INCREASED INTEREST IN HCCs

Has your affiliation and interaction with university faculty members increased your interest in attending college? A two-tailed probability between %’s yielded a t-statistic of 3.116; df =149; two-tailed probability = 0022.

Has your week long stay at a university campus influenced your decision to attend college? A two-tailed probability between %’s yielded a t-statistic of 3.185; df =148; two-tailed probability =.0018.

What impact has attending the Glenville College Forensics Science HSTA Summer Institute had on increasing your interest in health care careers? 2015  Mean: 3.26, SD: 1.09, N=78 2014  Mean: 2.88, SD: 1.19, N=73 2015  Mean: 3.26, SD: 1.09, N=78 2014  Mean: 2.88, SD: 1.19, N=73 Independent T-Test Between Means t-statistic=2.05; df=149 two-tailed prob. =.0421 Independent T-Test Between Means t-statistic=2.05; df=149 two-tailed prob. =.0421

Most and Least Liked Workshops MOST LIKED – Fingerprinting(55.1%/2015) vs. (37.8%/2014) – DNA Analysis(12.80%/2015) vs. (16.20%/2014) – Blood Typing(10.30%/2015) vs. (20.30%/2014) LEAST LIKED – Casting(25.60%/2015) vs. (13.50%/2014) – Handling Evidence (23.10%/2015) vs. (28.40%/2014) – Trace Evidence Collection (21.80%/2015) vs.(17.60%/2014)

After participating in the Glenville State HSTA Summer Institute, are your more interested in going into a STEM career?

Student Comments (Negative) The late nights made it a horrible experience. You cant focus on class when you are sleep deprived. There shouldve been an option of not going on the outings because staying out until 12 or 1 in the morning is ridiculous. Made this the most misrible week ever The dorms are not very sanitary. Dont feed us as much i gained some weight from all the cookies and ice cream.

Final Comments  Overall enjoyment of and satisfaction with the program remained steady from last year to this year.  2015 Enjoyment (83.3%) vs. 2014 Enjoyment (86.3%)  2015 Satisfaction (  =4.01) vs. 2014 Satisfaction (  =3.97)  Regarding increased interest in science and math due to participation in SI also remained steady  2015 Science Interest (92%, Yes) vs. 2014 Science Interest (87%, Yes)  2015 Math Interest (48.7%, Yes) vs. 2014 Math Interest (42.5%, Yes)

Final Comments Overall, this year’s institute was more favorably rated than last year. Mentors, Faculty, Teachers and FSCs, for the most part, either remained steady or received higher ratings. Although not significantly different, last year’s participants also perceived they learned more from the activities/workshops, with the exception of the Handling Evidence & Trace Evidence Workshops. Nevertheless, mean response ranged from 3.89 (Leadership Skills) to 4.40 (Handling Evidence)

HIGHLIGHTED STUDENT COMMENTS Being a part of HSTA is such a blessing. This experience is something so many people don't get offered. HSTA has opened doors for me that i would have never been able to open myself. Yes, the university faculty members gave me great information about attending college, for they were extremely nice and patient with answering any questions I had about college. They told me about how there daily classes usally aare scheduled. They also gave me suggestions for the college I should attend and the classes I should take for the field I want to major in. I like how it had us work together, not just one individual could complete this task. This camp truly brought all these groups closer. I loved working in the crime house. you all rock!!!!!

TEACHER RESULTS: PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Significant differences found in following areas: – CONTRIBUTION TO MATH CONTENT KNOWLEDGE IN FAVOR OF LAST YEAR’S CAMP Although not significant differences: – THIS YEAR’S PARTICIPANTS RATED THE FOLLOWING HIGHER: PRE- SI ORIENTATION SESSIONS HIGHER SATISFACTION WITH SI COMFORT WITH LEADERSHIP SKILLS; FINGERPRINTING; CASTING; BLOOD TYPING; AND DNA ANALYSIS USE OF LEADERSHIP SKILLS & DNA ANALYSIS PREPARED TO HELP STUDENTS CONCEIVE AND CARRY OUT PROJECTS FACULTY COMPETENCE IN LEADING INSTRUCTIONAL SESSIONS

To what extent do you agree or disagree that the HSTA Summer Institute contributed to the following: 201520142013 3.89 (  ) 1.69 (sd) N=9 4.58 (  ) 0.67 (sd) N=12 4.00 (  ) 1.53 (sd) N=7 Science Content Knowledge 3.33 (  ) 1.50 (sd) N=9 4.50 (  ) 0.52 (sd) N=12 3.86 (  ) 1.46 (sd) N=7 Math Content Knowledge T-stat=-2.52 Df=19 P-value=.0210 4.00 (  ) 1.73 (sd) N=9 4.75 (  ) 0.45 (sd) N=12 4.14 (  ) 1.57 (sd) N=7 Forensics Content Knowledge

With regard to your role as a teacher, how effective were the HSTA pre-academy teacher orientation sessions at helping you to facilitate student learning during the student week? 2015  Mean: 4.89, SD: 0.33, N=92014  Mean: 4.75, SD: 0.45, N=12

How satisfied were you with the overall Summer Institute? 2015  Mean: 4.78, SD: 0.44, N=92014  Mean: 4.75, SD: 0.62, N=12

COMFORT & USE OF RESOURCES When asked about their comfort with teaching methods, the responses ranged from “Extremely” to “Not Very Comfortable” PREZI (  =3.56/0.88) – Lowest Rating was for PREZI (  =3.56/0.88) LEADERSHIP SKILLS & – Highest Rating was for LEADERSHIP SKILLS & BLOOD TYPING (  =4.67/0.50) BLOOD TYPING (  =4.67/0.50) When asked about their use of techniques/ resources, responses ranged from “A Lot” to “Not Available” FINGERPRINTING; HANDLING EVIDENCE & TRACE EVIDENCE COLLECTION (  =2.75/0.89) – Lowest Rating was for FINGERPRINTING; HANDLING EVIDENCE & TRACE EVIDENCE COLLECTION (  =2.75/0.89) LEADERSHIP SKILLS (  =4.44/0.73) DNA ANALYSIS (4.13/1.36) – Highest Rating was for LEADERSHIP SKILLS (  =4.44/0.73) DNA ANALYSIS (4.13/1.36)

Least and Most Useful Resources 54.5% PREZI 90% Last year, 54.5% reported that PREZI would be the most useful resource for their HSTA Club and 90% (N=10)stated that it would be most useful in their Classroom; however, only 25% (N=8) said that it would be most useful in Club and Classroom. DNA ANALYSIS (37.5%) PREZI(57.1%) This year, DNA ANALYSIS, was selected as most useful in Club (37.5%) and Classroom (50%). PREZI (57.1%) as least useful in Club and Classroom.

All but one teacher reported that they gained ideas for student projects. 2015  Mean: 4.38, SD: 0.74, N=82014  Mean: 3.92, SD: 0.90, N=12

Please indicate the extent to which you agree with the following statement, "The HSTA faculty in charge of curriculum and content were competent in leading the instructional sessions. 2015  Mean: 4.89, SD: 0.33, N=92014  Mean: 4.33, SD: 1.23, N=12

Teacher Comments Prezi is a difficult piece of software to use. It is an unreliable novelty. Powerpoint is a much more reliable medium for presenting information. I hope that in future years, the GSC HSTA camp will return to using it. Math! I need training in statistics such as ANOVA, T test, etc.

Final Comments Overall, teachers perceived/reported that – This year’s SI did not contribute as much to their content knowledge in Science, Math, and Forensics as last year’s camp. – However, higher ratings were received for the pre- academy orientation and faculty competence in leading instructional sessions. – Although not as high as last year, they either “Agreed” or “Strongly Agreed” that the SI improved their teaching (  =4.44). – They were either “Extremely Satisfied” or “Satisfied” with the SI (  =4.78).

HIGHLIGHTED TEACHER COMMENTS  I am a former HSTA student and mentor, and now teacher. It has made a tremendous impact in my own life, and I feel a strong draw to sharing that with current HSTA students.  I think HSTA is a worthwhile program, and I believe in it wholeheartedly!! I truly enjoy working with the students and watching them go off to build their own lives. HSTA is instrumental in helping them succeed, and I'm proud to be a part of it. :)
