Protests and Impacts THE NEW DEAL HOW DID THE NEW DEAL AFFECT THE NATION?

Left Wing Liberal (more government intervention) The New Deal had not done enough. It should give more aid to the needy. Radical View: The government should seize factories, and unused land. Jobs should be given to unemployed. Right Wing Conservative (less government intervention) New Deal has gone too far in expanding the role of the federal government. Tax $$ being wasted The New Deal is Socialist and unconstitutional. CRITICS ATTACK THE NEW DEAL

1934: Asked Americans in a fireside chat, “the plain facts of your individual situations. Are you better off than you were last year?” People answer a resounding “YES” by electing a large number of Democrats in both the House and the Senate. FDR’S RESPONSE

Strike down the National Industrial Recovery Act. Ruled that it violated the separation of powers by giving the President power to regulate business rather than Congress. Strike down the Agricultural Adjustment Act. Regulating Agricultural production IS NOT the federal government’s job. SUPREME COURT ATTACKS THE NEW DEAL

There were different reactions to FDR’s New Deal. What is one way that right wing and left wing attitudes towards the New Deal were different? FDR responded to his critics and was supported by the American people. Explain one way that Americans showed support for the New Deal programs enacted by FDR. TURN & TALK

Labor movement Strengthened power grew Wagner Act: guaranteed the right of workers to form unions and to bargain collectively. Automobile, rubber, and steel industries organized unions. Union membership doubled from 14% 28% in 1940 OVERALL IMPACT ON WORKERS

FDR influenced by Eleanor Roosevelt. She encouraged him to place more women in government positions. Women pressured to leave workforce to open up jobs for men with families to support. Labor unions often supported the exclusion of women from the workforce. A MIXED DEAL FOR WOMEN

Competition for jobs Discrimination in hiring practices Unemployment rates much higher for African Americans than whites New Deal agencies practiced segregation. Educated African Americans able to get some government jobs. DISAPPOINTING DEAL FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS

Jobs dries up in the Southwest where most Mexican Americans lived. Experienced similar racial discrimination in hiring practices The AAA pays farmers to cut back on planting. Mexican farm laborers lose their jobs. Mexican laborers who were not citizens could not enroll for New Deal work relief. 1/3 return to Mexico A TOUGH DEAL FOR MEXICAN AMERICANS
