Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Data Center Energy Management Strategies Overview Obtaining CEUs and Certificates FEMP is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education & Training and has awarded 0.X CEUs (60 Min = 0.1 CEUs, 90 Min = 0.2 CEUs) for this session. To earn CEUs and a certificate of completion, participants must: – attend the session – complete a short assessment (5 questions) and brief evaluation by logging on to: http://www.wbdg.org/education/energyexchange2015.php Note: participants must register once with the National Institute of Building Sciences’ Whole Building Design Guide (WBDG.org) to complete the requirements and obtain their certificate. 2

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Data Center Energy Management Strategies Overview Learning Outcomes By attending this session, attendees will receive an overview of: – Executive Order 13693 provisions and other reasons to improve the energy efficiency of data centers – DOE-led voluntary initiative, the Better Buildings Data Center Partnerships, to raise data center efficiency nation-wide – Real world applications of existing best practices and technologies to saving energy – Agency and Corporate approaches to increasing energy efficiency 3

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Data Center Energy Management Strategies Overview Why Data Centers? Data Centers are energy intensive, may be the most significant load within a building or an installation One half or more of the delivered energy used to support a typical data center is used for cooling and power conversion Agencies directed by President in Executive Order 13693, Section 3(a)(ii) – Ensure the agency chief information officer promotes data center energy optimization, efficiency, and performance; – Install and monitor advanced energy meters in all data centers by fiscal year 2018; – Establish a power usage effectiveness target of 1.2 to 1.4 for new data centers; – Establish a power usage effectiveness target of less than 1.5 for existing data centers 4

Energy Exchange : Federal Sustainability for the Next Decade Data Center Energy Management Strategies Overview How Can We Help – Better Buildings Data Center Partners` 5 Better Buildings Accelerator Partner DOE provides: Recognition for leadership Promotion of results Best in class technical and communications support Opportunities to network and learn from other leaders Partner: Commits one or more data centers to a 25% energy efficiency improvement over 5 years Pledges to share annual progress toward goal Pledges to share best practices and innovative solutions (showcase projects) To join contact Elena Berger, (202) 586-2635, elena.berger@ee.doe.gov TPappp

Data Center Energy Management Strategies Overview Backup Slide – EO 13693 Implementation Instructions Agencies should adopt a cloud-first policy when developing new systems. Agencies will evaluate existing data centers unable to achieve 1.5 for alternative solutions. – Assign a data center energy practioner to data centers – Encourages use of shared service providers and contracted data center services. – Consolidate into more efficient data centers Procurement preference for data centers with the lowest demonstrated PUE Encourages participation in the Better Buildings initiative 9
