13 In general, a quadratic equation may have : (1) two distinct (unequal) real roots (2) one double (repeated) real root (3) no real roots

17 △ = b 2 - 4ac Since the expression b 2 - 4ac can be used to determine the nature of the roots of a quadratic equation in the form ax 2 – bx + c = 0, it is called the discriminant of the quadratic equation.
