3 Review Your Transcript Take a look at where you are and consider where you want to be as you review your post-high school options

4 Keep in Mind with your Transcript Look for grades/credits that need to be fixed ◦Is credit recovery or summer school needed? ◦Are there Ds that need to be replaced? Check your progress towards graduation ◦Credits/categories ◦Essential Skills Take a peek at your cumulative GPA ◦This is the last year to update your GPA before applying to colleges next year! ◦Doing well in junior year shows maturity and growth

5 5 Post-HS Options 4-Year University Community College Trade School Military Employment Junior year is an important year to prep for your next step in life!

6 4-Year University Transcript: ◦GPA: Most schools require a minimum 3.0 ◦All Cs or above for core classes ◦World Language credits (2 of the same!) ◦Through Algebra 2 for math ◦Next semester is the last semester of grades that will go on your transcript before you apply! ◦Modified diploma is not accepted ◦16 Academic Credits  Don’t slack off this year or next!  15 credits is required for graduation

7 4-Year University SAT/ACT: most schools accept either ◦Glencoe Juniors take for FREE on Feb 7! SAT: ◦3 sections: critical reading, writing, math ◦Measures conceptual thinking ◦Broken up into more sections (10 total) ◦Score of 200-800 each section ACT: ◦English, math, reading and science ◦Related to what you have learned in HS ◦Score of 1-36 ◦Includes interest inventory  Helps you choose college major or career path Test Dates this Spring: ACT: Feb 7 April 18 June 13 SAT: January 24 March 14 May 2 June 6 Hybrid Test at Glencoe: Thursday, January 29 th

10 4-Year University College Visits ◦Great time over Winter and Spring Break or summer! ◦See/experience the campus, stay in the dorms, meet current students People who earn a 4-year Bachelor’s Degree make an average of $1 million more in their lifetime than those with only a HS diploma!

11 Community College 2+ years Modified or Standard Diploma, Undocumented students – all ok! No GPA requirement No World Language credits required Placement Tests ◦Reading, Writing, Math are required

12 Community College Transfer Degree vs. Associates Degree ◦Transfer: To help you prep for 4-year university. Associates: Particular set of classes to complete a degree Many 3 or 6-month programs offered ◦Called Career Pathways at PCC ◦Examples: HVAC Program, Corrections Technicians, 911 Dispatcher, Bookkeeper, Pharmacy Technician, Food Service Common Programs for 2-year schools: ◦Auto Tech, Mechanics, Nursing, Dental Assisting, Business/Accounting

13 Trade School Shorter Programs ◦Enter workforce quickly Specific job training and career skills ◦Certificate/License ◦Apprenticeship Common Programs: ◦Massage, Cosmetology ◦Pipe Fitting, Plumber, Carpentry, ◦Electrician, Heavy Equipment Operator ◦Culinary ◦Diesel Mechanic, Auto Detailing/Painting

14 Military 5 Branches: ◦Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy Must have Standard Diploma ◦Modified Diploma and GED are not accepted ASVAB test: ◦FREE at Glencoe on Thursday, January 29 th ◦Sign up in the counseling center

15 Employment Finding work can be difficult! Work Skills needed: ◦Timeliness, regular attendance ◦Able to learn new tasks and perform well ◦Work well with other people and bosses ◦Be eager to learn ◦Willing to accept responsibility Use of your transcript and/or references

16 Post-HS Option Activity In a group, you will get a sample student’s history Based on the facts mentioned, determine which post-HS option suits that student best Identify the information or words that helped you identify your decision As a group, create a rationale for why you think that is the best option
