Population density: A measurement of population per unit area (square mile, kilometer, etc.). Settlement pattern: Distribution of human settlements on the landscape.

Natural resources: Valuable material such as minerals, trees, or water that are supplied by nature. Monsoons: A heavy rainy season which lasts for several months.

Plate tectonics: Theory that the Earth's surface is made up of large plates that are continuously moving Subduction: Process by which one tectonic plate moves beneath another.

Deforestation: Cutting down large areas of trees. Soil Erosion: The wearing away of soil by wind or water

Natural hazard: Fire, flood, storm, earthquake, or other hazard(s) which may result in danger to life and property. Demographics: The characteristics of population such as age, income, ethnicity, etc.

population pyramid: A graphical illustration that shows the distribution of men & women in various age groups of a population birth rate: The number of live births per 1,000 population in a given year. death rate: The number of deaths per 1,000 population in a given year.

Primary: portion of a region's economy devoted to mining, lumbering, agriculture, etc Secondary: portion of a region's economy devoted to the processing of basic materials extracted by the primary sector. Tertiary: portion of a region's economy devoted to transportation, retail and wholesale operations, insurance, etc. Quaternary: portion of a region's economy devoted to information and idea-generating activities

per capita GDP: The GDP divided by the total population. standard of living: How well-off a person or a country is.

Hinduism: The religion, philosophy, culture and the way of life of the majority of people in India. The worlds 3 rd largest religion. Buddhism: A philosophy/religion based on the spiritual teachings of Siddhartha Gautama Buddha.

Sikhism: A belief system which blends Hindu traditions with Islamic monotheistic traditions. Islam: A religion based on a belief in one god and the teaching of Muhammad

caste system: the ranking of members in a society by occupational status Karma: The effects of a person's past actions on his or her present and future state. Dharma: The natural law and established order, and the proper behavior

cultural diffusion: The spread of a culture, idea and/or trait. Guru: Teacher of spiritual wisdom. Reincarnation: Belief that one's soul lives many life times in order to grow and learn.

malnutrition: illness caused by lack of food. infrastructure: Basic services necessary for development to take place, for example, roads, electricity, sewage, water, education and health facilities.
