Chemical Bond: Chemical bonding is the joining of atoms to form new substances. – Think making compounds. – What do compounds look like? Chemical bond is an interactions that holds 2 atoms together. This happens when: – Electrons are shared – Electrons are gained – Electrons are lost What is a compound? What is a bond? What part of the atom is in charge of bonds?

Review of Atoms How do we determine the number of electrons? Remember: atomic number = number of protons – SO protons = electrons because atoms have NO CHARGE Where do we find electrons? – On rings/orbitals/shells! Valence electrons = electrons on outermost shell NO PP EN What is a valence electron? Where do we find valence electrons?

To Bond or to not Bond… Remember that not all elements will bond! – Noble gases do not like to form chemical bonds because they are completely full! – REMEMBER RULE OF 8! – Elements are considered full when they have 8 electrons on the outermost ring. What is a compound? What is a bond? What do periods tell us? What do groups tell us?

A valence electron is an electron in the outermost energy level of an atom. Most atoms form bonds by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons until they have 8 valence electrons.
