2 Do Now Why do high school teachers teach one subject instead of different subjects? What would happen if one teacher had to teach all the subject areas? Where does glass come from? How about paper?

3 Standard 10.1 Understand how inventory and planning affect business operations.

4 Today’s Goals I can: Explain the steps in the manufacturing process. Determine that different goals are produced by using different manufacturing techniques. Recognize the significance of businesses focusing on one part of the manufacturing process.

5 Make the Connection Cost/Benefits of producing goods in different ways. Focus on what you do well in order to increase profits and sustainability. Focus on quality and improvements to avoid accidents, injuries or lawsuits.

6 What is an Extractor? An extractor is a business that grows products or takes raw materials from nature. **Raw materials- unprocessed natural products used in manufacture.(oil, coal, air,cotton,water) Where does glass or paper come from?

7 What is a manufacturer? A business that takes the extractor’s products and changes them into a form that consumer’s can use. Examples of manufacturers: Ford Intel Sony

8 Activity 1/Timeline Students will create a timeline of 5 important events with an image in American history relating to manufacturing. Students will go to http://www.xtimeline.com/timeline/U-S- Industry-and-Manufacturing Example: 1914 and Henry Ford

9 3 types of manufacturing Custom manufacturing- Building a specific and unique product to meet individual customer needs. (Ex. Dentures, car) Mass production- assembling a large number of products via assembly line. Example: (Coca-cola bottling, Toys) Processing- changing the form of materials.

10 Activity 2/Custom Made Students will come up with a creative idea to re-make the cell phone in pairs. Each pair will come up with a creative way and then share with the class. Target audiences: Teens Kids Adult business person Social media focus Truck driver Elementary school kids Musician Senior citizen Soccer mom Stockbroker

11 Activity 2 continued Pick any magazine that you would place an advertisement in. Examples: (Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan etc.). Label magazine on top of poster. Create the cell phone ad geared to your target audience. List 3 custom features appealing to your audience. Include price- Is this reasonable for them? Record which features are best for your phone.

13 Activity 3/ Path of a Product Students will be given an extracted item. Cotton/Jeans Cow/Milk Grapes/wine Tree/paper Sand/glass Metals/Cans, Jewelry etc. Students will illustrate raw material, process, finished good and retail store.

15 Label each step of the processing cycle. When you are finished you will be matched up with someone who had the same raw material(extracted item). 1. Explain the steps in the process to your partner. 2. Discuss what you did and answer could I have done it a little differently? Why?
