1 Krill: Any small, pelagic, shrimplike crustaceans of the family Euphausiidae, eaten as food by certain whales.  The lowly krill averages around two inches (five centimetres) in length, but it represents a giant-sized link in the global food chain.  Krill feed on phytoplankton, microscopic, single-celled plants that drift near the ocean’s surface and live off carbon dioxide and the sun’s rays.

2 Adelie Penguin: A penguin, Pygoscelis Adelie, occurring in large colonies in Antarctica.  Both parents care for the eggs. While one stays behind keeping the eggs warm and safe from predators, the other parent heads out to sea to eat.  In September and October—springtime in that part of the world—thousands of Adelies gather on the rocky Antarctic shoreline.

3 Elephant Seal: A seal, mostly found in the Pacific Ocean, that has a curved proboscis resembling an elephant's trunk.  There are two species of elephant seals, the northern and southern.  Southern elephant seals live in sub- Antarctic and Antarctic waters that feature brutally cold conditions but are rich in the fish, squid, and other marine foods these seals enjoy.

4 Iceberg: A large floating mass of ice, detached from a glacier and carried out to sea.  When an iceberg reaches warm waters, the new climate attacks it from all sides.  Icebergs pose a danger to ships traversing the North Atlantic and the waters around Antarctica. After the Titanic sank near Newfoundland in 1912, the United States and twelve other countries formed the International Ice Patrol to warn ships of icebergs in the North Atlantic.
