4 BILC CONFERENCE Athens, 22-26 June 2008 4 - The Hellenic Military School of Foreign Language was founded in 1952 to cover initially the need of training for the officer in the English language, later on in other languages (French, German, Turkish, Serbian, Bulgarian, Albanian etc.) From the day it was founded until the year 1961 the school was accommodated at the hall of the Building that currently houses the Participial Army Fund. - From that year until now it is housed in buildings of ''FAKINOU'' camp in Papagou, except for a period of nine (9) months (September 82 - July 83), when it had moved in the Military Academy (old buildings at “Areos Square”). 6 BILC CONFERENCE Athens, 22-26 June 2008 6 Mission of the Military School of Foreign Languages HELLENIC MILITARY SCHOOL of FOREIGN LANGUAGES The Mission of the Hellenic Military School of Foreign Languages is tailored to provide to the trainees the necessary knowledge in foreign languages in order to be able to meet the needs of the Greek Army General Staff, namely:   Attend any education abroad.   Man positions in various Greek Embassies all around the world   Staffing Headquarters or Units in the UN, NATO and the European Security Agencies   Participate in Peacekeeping Operations   Take liaise.

16 BILC CONFERENCE Athens, 22-26 June 2008 16 - The teaching of French and German language, where the language learning of the executives is certified by their respective foreign institutes, is based on teaching methods approved by these Institutes. - All the teaching material is updated on the beginning of each academic year in collaboration with the aforementioned Institutes. 17 BILC CONFERENCE Athens, 22-26 June 2008 17 Teaching Material HELLENIC MILITARY SCHOOL of FOREIGN LANGUAGES - - The teaching of English and Turkish, is based on standardized training systems that have been issued by the DLI / USA (Defense Language Institute / USA), which comprise a number of books – books on cassettes reinforced with certified commercial books. The foreign language for the English language is certified by an official body (Hellenic American Union and University of Cambridge). The Turkish Language is administered by Tőmer University of Ankara, after the candidates successfully participate in the exams of three difficulty levels.

18 BILC CONFERENCE Athens, 22-26 June 2008 18 HELLENIC MILITARY SCHOOL of FOREIGN LANGUAGES Military NATO Terminology via Distance Learning Organization – Operation - T - The school works with the use of individual computers in nationwide Scale, linking learners through the Internet on the special teaching platform (estia) of the school, (like the one that hosts the conference web-site) operated by the Hellenic Military School of Foreign Languages and technical support from a company in Information Technology. Requirements for school attendance The officers, who are of rank Major, are required to have knowledge of English FCE level and above. (SLP 3232,Stanag 6001) To have an intermediate knowledge of personal computer usage and Internet navigation. Possess all the necessary equipment.
