7 The basis of CLIL is that new subject content from other curriculum areas is taught and learnt through the foreign language. Children’s learning experience is enhanced by exploiting the links between the two subjects. Since it is used for real purposes, the new language is also learned more ‘naturally’, thus building on other forms of learning. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. This resource has been created through the LinkedUp Award Scheme.

8 As the subject content should always be the main focus of the CLIL lesson, children should be encouraged to draw on their knowledge about language in order to make sense of new concepts. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. 9 CLIL is based on language acquisition, so children’s fluency is more important than accuracy. Existing subject lesson plans have to be modified to take into account children’s ability in the new language, and therefore the planning process is vital. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. 10 Integrating language learning into the primary curriculum can lead to significant gains in children’s understanding, as they interpret and reinterpret their knowledge in a fresh and challenging context. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. 12 There are natural links between languages and many subjects of the curriculum. Effective integration of language learning into the curriculum can motivate teachers and learners and makes the best use of the curriculum time available. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. 13 We can adapt the materials, select or substitute ideas and activities as necessary to meet the needs of our children, to fit the time available and to meet the priorities of each school. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. 14 1.Teaching through and in the TL can be done at any level provided that certain conditions exist. 2.Teaching through and in the TL requires learners to learn in the TL. They need content to learn. They need language through which to learn - especially talk. 3.Teaching through a TL requires attention to oracy and literacy and demands that content is made accessible.
