Aim of the Unit The aim of this unit is to introduce students to the area of Strategic Information Systems. The unit will attempt to develop the following: – An understanding of the nature of problems and issues faced by organisations at the operational and strategic level. – An examination of how strategic Information Systems and Information Technology help to overcome such issues. © Dr. Sofiane Tebboune

Content of the Unit Organisational issues: – We will look at the concept of organisational strategy. – It is important to understand the reasons behind the increase in IT investments. – We will also discuss how Information Technology contributes to organisational strategy. © Dr. Sofiane Tebboune

Content of the Unit Strategic Information Systems: – We will look at some essential topics in Information Systems: Efficiency and effectiveness improvements using IS. Concepts of IS integration and their impact on organisations. – We will also look at more advanced and more contemporary IS: Enterprise Systems. Some aspects of Business Intelligence in relation to organisational strategy. © Dr. Sofiane Tebboune

Teaching Modes A mixture of lectures and discussion-based tutorials. Traditional lectures will be used to cover the theoretical side of the topics. Discussions around research papers and other material will normally follow lectures. Self directed learning-based tasks will also be used. © Dr. Sofiane Tebboune

Assessments Coursework: worth 50% of the overall unit mark. – Essay on a chosen topic in the area of Information Systems. Examination: worth 50% of the overall unit mark. – Essay-based, and covers the whole syllabus. © Dr. Sofiane Tebboune
